Well yes. His later (starting from Swordfishtrombones) period is better than the early period, although the latter has some gems too. It's hard to say which is better, the music or the lyrics.
Real Gone is maybe a bit too "even", though, with the songs resembling each other too much.
I like his world of old towns, rain, circuses and marginal characters, which is in the unidentifiable (and maybe non-existent) past.

I haven't heard a lot of his stuff, but I like what I have heard. A friend of mine used to have some of his CD's, so I heard random things when I would hang out with him.
What's he building in there...?

Wasn't Tom Waits the voice in "Tommy The Cat" by Primus? I seem to recall that he was...(?)
He was also good in the movie Short Cuts, if any of you have seen it. His character was married to Lily Tomlin in it.

He also plays Renfield in Bram Stoker's Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola.

I'm a fan.... he is brilliant! I never noticed that was him in Dracula. Cool! That's a fantastic movie and one of the best characters!

I love him too. I think he's a genius and legend along with David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Lou Reed. It's hard for me to decide whether I adore him more than Lou Reed or the other way around. His lyrics are so magical, sometimes I compare him to Leonard Cohen.
I think a younger group with a nice flair for imagery in songs is Modest Mouse, and if you like the less refined sound of most of Waits' work, you might like Ugly Casanova, which was the side project of Modest Mouse's frontman. There's only one Ugly Casanova album - Sharpen Your Teeth and it's worth a listen. I enjoy every song on it.
Did you see the Jim Jarmusch movie, "Coffee and Cigarettes"? He has a hilarious, adorable scene with Iggy Pop. He's had so many tiny roles in movies. He was in "Mystery Train" which was also dir. by Jarmusch, and he was in "The Outsiders" as well.
Some of my favorite songs of his are Chocolate Jesus, Step Right Up, Clap Hands, Diamonds On My Windshield, Hoist That Rag, Filipino Box Spring Hog, Broken Bicycles, Gun Street Girl, and Warm Beer and Cold Women.
