I was taking note of skyrocketing gas prices as I carpooled with friends on a church outing to the mountains. I think the highest they went was 2.62 a gallon in one town. Are they going to come down? Or is this the beginning of skyrocketing gas prices.

It think it would probably be safe to say that when the gas prices hit their max, possibly around $3.00 avg, they'll be a plateau. They will hoover there and then may fluctuate a few cents here and there but no they will probably never come back down. This is the "rate of inflation", although usually a highly exagerated phenomenon.

it's already at $3.00 here.

I think they'll go up and down a little but mostly stay up.

I think the high prices are a good thing to get people to look at our dependence on cheap oil. At least people are starting to talk about it here at VeggieBoards.

It's about AU$1.20/litre here

which comes out to about AU$4.80/gallon which is US$3.70. Approximately.

Enjoy your cheap gas. :D

Plus, as I understand it the oil companies are making record profits, so doesn't that mean they could reduce prices and make not-so-record profits? Escalating prices could bring about a serious recession.

it's too bad gas can't cost different prices for different people. that way the middle classes would be encouraged to not waste gas, and lower classes wouldn't have to pay an arm and a leg to get to work.

that's one of the leftest things i've said in awhile!

Why would the reduce prices? The should maximize profits. When the prices are so high that it is not in the consumers best interest, the consumer will refuse to pay.

As for recession... well look, we have to switch from oil to alternative fuels right? Its way too late to make that transition smoothly, there will be growing pains.

The oil companies (Shell, Esso, Texaco, etc. etc.) are laughing their heads off all the way to the banks. I read the figures yesterday - astronomical. The fat-cats and shareholders won't need to worry about how to pay for THEIR petrol. The proletariat are paying it for them.

Ah... the life of a fat-cat is such fun!!!

I'm guessing that the gas prices aren't coming down. I've been working on building up enough endurance to bike to work every day, instead of 1-2 days a week. The price of gas has gotten high enough that I finally looked up the bus route to take me to work so that on the days that it's raining or (in a few short months) snowing, I still don't have to take my car.

So far, I haven't seen an enormous difference when I fill my tank. Its certainly more expensive, but not so much that I'm truly hurting. I use about 13 gallons a week, 1 gallon each way to and from work. An extra $6.50 a week is annoying, but it will have to do until I ...

a) win the lotto so I can buy a place closer to work
b) get a raise substantial enough to trade in my old car for a hybrid
c) marry a man with a house closer to work
d) can ride the metro ... 2017. Woohoo! :|
e) learn to fly

I'm partial the fifth option, but would take any of the above.

It takes me about $50 to fill my tank which I have to do twice a week most times since me & my husband share the car. So Im seeing a difference in finances thats at least $90 -$100 more than im used to paying a month.

I'm fortunate that my commute to work is short- although not short enough to use a bicycle. Ryan and I are discussing the option of becoming a one car family next year when I go back to school.

In the meantime, we plan our errands and do the best we can with what we've got. I'd love to have a hybrid car, but it's just not in the budget right now, especially with me becoming a student again in less than a year.

Gas prices won't be going down. For those of you in the US: you are paying much less than most of the rest of the world. Here in Canada, we pay about twice what some of you pay. And we pay quite a bit less than those in Europe. I am laughing at the rising cost, and here's why: I ride a scooter!! It's perfect for jetting around town, between jobs and school, and I spend $5-6/week at most!! And insurance is 50-75% less than that for a car. For those of you '2 car families', an idea could be to get rid of one of the cars, and replace it with a scooter. Whoever has to run the kids around can take the car, while the other uses the scooter. Think of the money (not to mention the emissions!!) you could save!!

The price of petro can never be high enough to make up for the environmental, animal and human destruction.

With the hurricane, they're already saying gas will go up .60 per gallon. I don't own a car and haven't in 10 years. The prices will definitely affect the cost of airplane tickets, which were sickly under priced anyway.

**Here's a fact about airplanes:
If everyone on the plane were to drive to the destination separately, in separate cars, the airplane ride would STILL use more gas than all those cars put together. Sick.

"I am laughing at the rising cost, and here's why: I ride a scooter!! "
I always wanted one of those things!! How are they in the snow and slush? I've got my bike, which I need to ride every day, but lately I've been a wuss and have been taking the subway. Still, mass transit is great, just that I can't really afford to pay for it right now.

Get yourselves a French Fry Grease converter and run on vegetable oil. Free grease-aline. Just thank all the fat fat people for it!

Gas can probably go up to $10 a gallon and I'll be ok for personal transportation - it's the shipping and materials costs for my business that will hurt me the most with rising gas prices....

$3.16 is the high spotted around these parts. As of yesterday, Chicago had the highest average in the country ($3.09).

<<<glad to be car-less. :)

Yeah I heard that with the hurricane the prices will go even higher for the down time and/or destroyed oil rigs.

Petrol prices here in Aus are, according to the news, "creating an epidemic of petrol runners" lol.

I am very glad I don't drive :) Though I feel very sory for my friends and family that do...still like another poster said ^^^, perhaps this will inspire folk into finding environmentally friendly alternatives.

:)

I look forward to the day when I can trade my car in for a bike, if only because cars are money black-holes.
