Fish are our friends; don't eat them.

No, but....

congratulations on the steps you have taken thus far. You have done a wonderfully positive thing by eliminating other forms of meat from your diet.

Hopefully you will find support and good information here if/when you decide to take a next step... and meanwhile.

~Do vegetarians eat fish?
~An am I still a Vegetarian, if I eat fish, but not meat?

This is a touchy subject for many vegetarians. I agree that vegetarians do not eat fish or sea animals, as they are living creatures with nervous systems and feelings -- unlike plants.

But there are many so-called vegetarians that do eat fish. There are "vegetarian" cookbooks with fish recipes, and restaurants that include fish in "vegetarian" dishes. I believe this is due to a disagreement over the meaning of the word meat. Fish (and poultry) are sometimes treated as a separate category from red meat such as beef, pork, and mutton. So someone who knows that vegetarians don't eat meat, may assume that fish and poultry are okay for vegetarians.

However, we're really trying to combat this misconception. Many of us are getting tired of being offered fish when we say we're vegetarian. So don't be surprised if you get some peoples' hackles up when you ask this question! Just try not to take it personally... there is a lot of prior history in real vegetarians' reactions to fish-eating "vegetarians."

Or eat whatever you want. Only a special idiot would change their lifestyle because they wanted to call themselves something.

Vegetarians do not eat fish.
You are not a vegetarian if you eat fish.

Fish are animals.
Vegetarians don't eat animals.

Yes..fish are animals. What about 'vegetarians' who eat eggs? What does everybody think about that? I don't eat eggs but I have veggie friends who do. I'd be interested to read what people on veggie boards think.

NO. Just plain no. you are a pestotarien, which is still a good step in the right direct, for improving your health, animal welfare and the enviroment. Good job

pestotarian? One who eats Pesto sauce on all food? ;)

I believe you mean Pescotarian.

Even the term pescotarian doesn't make sense. It ought to be piscatarian or pisciterian, as pisce is Latin for fish. Other words that use the Latin as a prefix are spelt pisca-, or pisci-, such as piscatorial (which refers to fishing rights) and pisciform (something shaped like a fish).

But I'm picky like that. Or is that pisce-y?

Consider this: I'm 15yrs old, and that's the only way to my protein, besides pill, cuz franklly I don't want to wind-up in the hospital, because of lack of protein deficiancy!

I think in the outside world (i.e. general nutrition books, magazines, internet, and common usage) - a fish-eating vegetarian is referred to as a pesco-vegetarian.

I have heard of pescetarian but only on VeggieBoards, so I'm not sure if people in the "real" world would know what you are talking about if you call yourself that.

(btw, I am a pesco-vegetarian so I understand where you are coming from. PM me if you want to talk more about it - I don't like talking about my decision to eat fish on VB for fear of starting a riot!)

I personally eat free range organic eggs. although I do see ethical problems with this I think they are rather small compared with those of eating animals. The eggs we buy are infertile: they are not alive and they do not have the potential to become living. I am looking to eliminate eggs from my diet soonish but it's difficult in present circumstances.

Consider this: I'm 15yrs old, and that's the only way to my protiean, besides pill, cuz franklly I don't want to wind-up in the hosital, because of lack of protiean definsicy!

It is very easy to get protein from plant sources. :) As long as you eat a good variety of plant foods, it's virtually impossible to become protein deficient. Take a peek at this: http://vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm

Protein shouldn't be a problem really, there are many other ways to get hold of most of the protiens you need (eg. pulses, beans, eggs if you eat them). The most common health problems encountered by veggies concern minor vitamins and minerals, and these too can be easily resolved. Personally I think taking care over your diet a bit more is a small price to pay for having a clear conscience.
