Hi first time here.I am pretty new to being vegan have been vegetariean most of my life and never gave any real thought to what my pets eat.Well IN A WAY I MEAN. I mean I feed my pets very good pet food, the healthiest the vet recamends.I have an assistance dog that tends to eat everything in sight and she's over weight,I have to keep her on diet dog food.My other dogs eat good food but have no weight problems.my cats eat good cat food and so does my farm animals and my rescued animals.I even cook and freeze some veggys that some of the pets like mixed with their food.
OK HERES THE PROBLEM.
I saw on animal planet were some woman tried to make her cats vegan, and it blinded them.Ok whats that all about? And if I can't feed my pets meat how do I keep them healthy and still be true to what I believe in?
Honestly, I'm not sure what to believe with the whole animal nutrition thing. On the one hand, vets all pretty much agree that cats and dogs need meat, on the other hand it sounds an awful lot like the arguments that humans need meat...
Anyway, it's a fascinating discussion, check out this thread:

ETA:
In general, it's a good idea to not put too much stock into what you see on animal planet. Do some serious research into the subject before you draw any conclusions.

Cat's need a particular substance in their food (it's something like tannin, but I think that's not quite right), and if they don't get it they can loose their sight. That said, there are vegan foods that provide that.
Dogs are definitly easier to feed a vegan diet to safely than cats, but personally I haven't been able to assure myself based on my readings that my dog would be healthy enough without animal protein, so with mixed feelings he still eats a normal premium dog food.
