View Full Version : Best zombie movie?

I know there are horror movie fans here and zombie fans. I went through some old threads but I can't distinguish between which are horror movies and which are just zombie movies. It would take me a long time if I googled them all and I don't have the time right now.
I need to buy today (in a few hours time) as a gift for someone a zombie DVD. I don't know much about them though. Could some kind souls post quick-quick and tell me which zombie movie is renowned as the best? And second best? And third best (just in case the shop doesn't stock the first title you give me).
Grateful thanks to anyone who can help.

Do you consider 28 Days Later a zombie movie?

Yeh, i like 28 days later, and there's also Dawn of the Dead...... but i prefer Shaun of the Dead, for a less serious zombie movie!!!

I did not see 28 Days Later, but I'm sure it is available in the shops here. I didn't realise there were zombies in it. But I remember someone telling me that in this movie there is a very graphic rape scene. Is this true? If so, it may not be suitable for the recipient of the gift.
I am noting Dawn of the Dead, and Shaun of the Dead. What does it mean "Shaun of the Dead"? Is Shaun the name of someone?

Consider it a potential rape scene. As in, it could have been if <insert name here> lived a little longer.
They're not technically zombies, but it's close enough that I've known people to say they were.

Great basic zombie movies:
Night Of The Living Dead
Dawn Of The Dead
Day Of The Dead
Return Of The Living Dead
The Evil Dead Series
Zombie
28 Days Later
Shaun Of The Dead
Redneck Zombies (really stupid, but someone who loves the genre will appreciate it for its silliness)

Okay. I'm sure one of these titles I will find in the shops. I checked out Shaun of the Dead, it is supposedly a comedy? That could be quite nice for a gift. Something more light-hearted. But I have a feeling it may not be available, but who knows.
Thank you for your quick help.
Missleigh: I've noted down all your titles. Thank you very much. (I saw them after I had written this post - I came back to edit it). Redneck Zombies sounds fun. Stupid movies are sometimes the best.

Shaun of the Dead is the British, more light-hearted and humourous version of the US Dawn of the Dead. Shaun is just the name of the main guy in the film. It's really funny! Excellent British humour :D

Oh, I love British humour!!! (I still laugh at Fawlty Towers although I've seen each episode at least 20 times).

One more question. How do zombies eliminate their food? Do they go to the toilet or do they just shi* in their pants? (I'm being serious here - I mean, they don't have brains left, only a nervous system, so surely they do not have the sense to pull down their trousers when they need to eliminate?)

Shaun of the Dead is a must watch if you like zombie movies. It's a rom-zom-com, a romance, zombie, comedy, and it works.
Braindead, directed by Peter Jackson (yes, he of Lord of the Rings), is my all time favourite zombie movie. http://tbhl.theonering.net/films/brain_dead.html It's a must see. It's funny, it's got gore, it's got the best lawnmower sequence in movie history. Oh, and did I mention it has gore? (It's called Dead/Alive in the US, apparently)

Ummmm...... can't say i've ever thought about that one, lol

I'm generally not a fan of zombie movies. I enjoyed 28 Days Later and the Evil Dead movies. And though it's far from being a classic I have a fondness for Return of the Living Dead 3. :)

Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Army of Darkness.
Diana: I imagine that zombies just sort of go in their pants, anytime, anywhere, like a baby would.

Do they actually "go"? Or does it kind of just leak out? I know it just leaks out of dead people, and zombies are dead people. But then, they are not entirely dead, are they?

That's a good point, I bet their organs don't work as well. Maybe it goes straight through them, more or less.

They seem to vomit a lot.

I am also always surprised that zombies wear clothes. But I suppose that is to satisfy the censors. (Amazing how nudity is considered worse than monstrous nasty dead people walking around munching on human beings.)
They must SMELL so horrible! I bet if movies had smells, one would have to wear masks or something to keep out the stink.

I thought zombies wore clothing because they were buried, or died, in clothing.

Another British one is Dog Soldiers.

Okay.... Ms. Chevious has won the prize. Not for the DVD I bought (I bought 28 Days Later as it was the only one available in the shop). But for her absolute CONVICTION that this is the best zombie movie ever. I am going to rent it this weekend and watch it!!
And I will ask punkmommy if her husband is still a zombie... but I suppose once a zombie, always a zombie.
I still think they look odd with their clothes on. I think naked zombies would be much more realistic. (*Knocks myself on the head - don't be stupid Diana - zombies aren't REAL!!! - I think*)
