Ok, I finally tried Tuno..yay..I will admit that it did kind of smell like a cross between cat food and tuna when I opened it, but I didn't let that deture me. I made a good ol' tuno sandwhich with it, and I must admit it tastes pretty darn good!:lick: ....I had to order it online though because I can't find it locally, so it was a little bit more expensive, but if you can find it near you I really suggest trying it, i give it a thumbs up!

Oh and I may be a dork but I thought it was so funny because on the side of the can you know how regular tunas say "dolphin safe" well on the Tuno is says "Dolphin and Tuna Safe" hehehe..sorry..I just had to add that
heh heh. so it was the canned variety you tried, then, candycane02? there is a frozen variety, too, i hear.
we tried the canned variety several years ago and were totally horrified by the smell, taste and texture. it was way too fishy smelling/tasting, and left a strange aftertaste in my mouth.
i hear the frozen variety is quite different, so i'd be willing to try it. but even my dog wouldn't touch the canned stuff, and my dog doesn't reject anything!

lol..yeah I had heard a lot of nightmares about some of the canned varieties, but I got this kind because it had good feedback, now I have forgotten what brand it is though..hmm...it didn't taste too fishy to me at all, nor did it smell to fishy. I hate the smell of seafood so if it would have smelt like that I wouldn't have eaten it either! I do hear a lot of good things about the frozen ones though so I am hoping that I will eventually be able to find some where I live, but that is every doubtfull

I've come across 3 varieties of Tuno myself - my favorite is the canned under the Natural Touch label, there's also the frozen variety that comes in a tube (kinda like GimmeLean), which isn't as oily as the canned stuff, but ok. Then I discovered the canned under the Worthington label and found out why so many people seem to hate it so much - now that stuff was nasty! You would think that the Natural Touch & Worthington canned stuff would be the same, but it definately isn't .. I just wonder why this difference does exist... hmmm

OHHHHHHH! That explains it (probably) then! I've always had the Natural Touch brand in a can, and I love it! Of course I've only eaten it in pasta salad, but the smell never grossed me out or anything when I opened the cans.
EVERYONE WHO HATED TUNO, GO BUY THE NATURAL TOUCH KIND!

You can find both canned and frozen tubes of Tuno (as well as a good chicken substitute called Chik-ettes) at nomeat.com. I've only used the frozen Tuno, and I love it! I make "tuna" salad by thawing and draining one tube of Tuno, adding 5 - 6 chopped green onions and a couple of chopped celery stalks, then mixing in Veganaise, and adding freshly ground pepper and LOTS of dill (fresh or a really good quality dried dill). Put in the refrigerator for at least one hour so the flavors can blend. I warm up flour tortillas, put Tuno salad in it, then add torn-up fresh spinach and cilantro. Yum! Check it out!

is this stuff vegan? i used to eat it when i was lacto-ovo but haven't thought to buy it since i recently made the switch to veganism. i used to love it though! it looks vegan to me but i still don't totally trust my own label reading skills. i'm still a n00b i guess. :P
This is the first positive review for tuno I've read -- I've seen it in the stores, but have been afraid. Now maybe I'll try some. :)

Out of curiosity, I picked this up last week at the store. Still haven't had the opportunity to open it yet. I have the Natural Touch brand, too, so I'm feeling a little more confident in it. I was simply going to dish it out on to some toasted bread, add mustard, and it as a sandwich, just like I used to do with real tuna.

Dixie's Dinner also makes a mock tuna mix for sandwiches and such....

Oooh! I can't get Tuno here and I really want to try it. One more reason I can't wait until I move. I kind of miss tuna salad sometimes. (Although I made some real tuna salad for my husband the other day and I nearly ralphed from the smell.)
Okay... I bought some. But I'm a little afraid to open it. I gave up fish 18 years ago (it was the first meat I gave up) & I don't quite know how I'll react...
Any serving suggestions?

When I try mine I'm going to simply do what I used to do with tuna:
Toast two slices of of bread, dump the tuno on the bread, add mustard, maybe some lettuce and possibly even tomato, and go to town.

I'm afraid it will too realistic and send me a tuna fish craving binge. I try to avoid meat analouges that seem very real because I am afraid, completey irrationally, that I will revert my old ways....

Okay... I tried it, and it was the nastiest, smelliest thing I've ever tried. And I tried preparing it a number of ways, but only succeeded in stinking up my kitchen. I had the canned Natural Touch brand. Blech. Oh well... at least now I'm no longer curious!

You should make Tuno Pasta Salad...it's awesome. I posted the recipe a few weeks ago.
I wish I had bought some. I have been wanting to make vegan tuno casserol. Haven't tried tuno yet.
I'm afraid to try mine now. It sits in the cabinet untouched. I'll have to give in an try a sandwich or salad with it one of these days.

All of the Tuno I have seen is not vegan so I have not tried it yet.
I saw the canned stuff and the frozen kind. Shannon
How is Tuno not vegan? I have the canned stuff in my cupboard, and the ingredients show it to be vegan. Is there more than one brand of Tuno? I thought it was trademarked.

If you're saying it's not vegan because of the "kosher dairy" - kosher statuses are generally irrelevant to whether something is veg*n or not. Tuno is probably just manufactured on the same equipment that also manufactures products containing dairy. I've heard an explanation before, but i can't remember why it is that they would have it K D instead of K DE.

Sorry about that, I just emailed them and asked them if it is vegan or not and I will post their reply when I get it back.
I am so mad! I found the frozen kind (which I hear is better), and I saw the K D on it and didn't even look at the ingredients, as I will not buy a product if that is on it.

I am so glad and I will just read labels instead of looking at the symbols and letters. I can't wait to try it! Shannon :)
