I tried Tuno in a store demo once. They way it was prepared was really great. The woman mixed it with vegenaise (if you like mayonaise, you just have to try this stuff) and added a chopped red pepper, green pepper, red onion, and then added a bunch of spices, and she served it on crackers.

MmmMmm. She knew what she was doing!

(I must admit I sampled quite a bit and got a stomach ache. :D)

Seriously. It tastes kinda like tuna, but I had to force myself to like that stuff in the first place, and Tuno is so heavily processed that I'd rather eat Tofu straight of out of the asceptic packaging than eat Tuno again.

Odd, I keep finding myself agreeing with what you write...

Until I read your post I never quite knew how to verbalize why *exactly* I don't eat analogs (other than the fact that I think they're junk with too many additives).

I bought some tuno today! Not too bad. I think I'll try the same thing with tofu, and see if it makes a big enough difference in taste to offset the cost.

It's pricey.

A late update to the Tuno saga :) : I bought some this week (the canned Natural Touch kind) and made a tuno-salad sandwich with it (mixed a dollop or so of Veganaise and some green onions with the Tuno and put it between two slices of bread with some tomato). I really enjoyed it -- so much so that I've had a few of the aforementioned sandwiches this week!

Anyway, different strokes for different folks and all that. :) But I really enjoyed it (and was, to be honest, quite surprised that I did)!

I tried some Tuno, too, and even my Omni husband liked it, however, I doubt that it would set off any tuna fish cravings. It's enough like tuna fish to be reminiscent of tuna, but not enough to be "like" tuna. Very strange, indeed. I had to keep smelling it because my nose couldn't place it. My nose kept saying, "it kinda smells like tuna", and my eyes kept saying, "it sorta looks like tuna", but really, it isn't anymore like tuna than fake steak is like London Broil.

I liked it though, and found it to be a nice change of pace.

I like your post equipro... and I agree.

I think the only thing it's really missing to be considered tunalike is the fish smell. (and to be frank, that's not a bad thing)

We finally tried it tonight, not half bad. It wasn't so good that I'd want to get it again though, but I was afraid from this thread it would be much worse. It didn't have an overwhelming scent and it wasn't bad tasting. It just wasn't the greatest, there was a flavor of some sort I didn't care for. We've got a local vegan deli that serves an unchicken salad sandwich that's really good and the Natural Choice Tuno wasn't close to that. But, if it was served to me at a friends house (yeah, like I have veggie friends, hehe) I'd eat it. Anyway, that's my review of tuno sandwiches.

I'm pretty much with you, Feliner. I think I'd buy it another time or two. It's just really expensive, and people can make something pretty close and for much cheaper with some chickpeas (that can even be much yummier and probably healthier too!)

If it was in cans the same size as tuna and cost the same, than I'd probably buy it regularly. :)

I've never tried Tuno, and I've never even seen it in the stores! I will have to look for it next time I'm at Whole Foods.
Where would I find the recipe for the chickpea version???

I wish I could find tuno, haven't been able to yet. I did find something just the other day called tuna salad 'not' by dixie diner...reminded me more of chicken than tuna? O well.

Ok here's my tuno story :-) i tried it once with some veganaise and some onion and celery, and it was actually edible. I do make something just as good with tofu, however - but one day i decided to buy a can again. when i opened it, it was rancid. I threw it out and i haven't been able to buy it again since. I haven't tried it frozen though, i dont think i've seen it sold that way around here.

I bought it once to try and duplicate my mom's tuna noodle casserole. It tasted good, but not at all like tuna. I think they need to add seaweed or something to give it a fish-ier taste.

Also, it's way too expensive. Four or five bucks for one tin where I buy it.

I'm excited. I didn't know any such thing existed, and tuna is just about the only animal-flesh food I ever miss.

I've never seen it in my Bread and Circus or my Trader Joe's!

To make the chickpea kind just mash up a can of chickpeas with Veganaise and add some finely chopped celery and onion. Add a pinch of kelp powder. It's the kelp that gives it that sea taste. Cheap and easy.

yeah, that recipe is up at www.veganmania.com. it's my "happy tuna salad". the kelp is a great addition but not neccessary, and be careful to not use too much or it'll come out tasting kind of...muddy.

and dill pickles! don't forget the diced dill pickles!! (dill relish will do, too) They "make" the chickpea salad, IMO :) :)

It'll probably be at B&C right on the shelf next to the tuna fish cans. Just like other people have said, it's not very tuna like, it's more like canned chicken. It's pretty good though, worth a go!

Nope. It's definitely around $4 dollars a can at Whole Foods too. Unless, perhaps, the Whole Foods nearest you carries a smaller canned version? (Which I wish there was one cause the other is so big!)

I'll have to look next time I'm in Whole Foods. It was a hefty sized can, not like a normal tuna can. But we generally wouldn't spend $4 on something like that, I can't imagine it was more than $2.99. Perhaps it was on sale or clearance.

I rinse that junk off the Tuno before I eat it. I just dump the can into a strainer and run it under the tap while jiggling it. Once it is washed and drained then it kinda doesn't have a taste, and a better texture. It's more like chicken, but I guess it depends on how you use it. I mixed it with salsa and heated and ate it on corn ships as chicken salsa nachos the other night - that was great.

I have to admit, I couldn't eat the stuff before I thought of rinsing it...I used to make sandwiches with it and take a few bites and then give the rest to my dog...she liked it.
