I know from a little reading that the body needs very little of this vitamin, but I am intending this diet to be lifelong and will at some point need to consider where to get adequate B12. So any ideas?

also, why do you ppl spell it veg*n?(yes, I am new to this!! LOL)

Beter than 2 weeks veg and counting!!

several years ago, it was discovered that although twinlab's b12 dots didn't list gelatin on the label, they actually contained gelatin. maybe they don't anymore. i would hope that they'd have fixed the label by now if they still use gelatin, but i really don't trust them. i don't buy any of their products anymore.

i use country life biochem superior b12 sublingual methylcobalamin lozenges now.

really?! i didn't know that. well, gelatin is not listed, so either they don't contain gelatin or they haven't done a thing about the label. it says "vegetarian formula".

ah, the response from them about it here (http://www.soystache.com/twinlab.htm) said that they would be coming out with a "new and improved vegetarian formula" in the future. that must be it.

Good for you :guitar:

I take a soft vegan multivitamin every 2-3 days. It claims 75mcg of B12 so I figure I should be plenty good. I've seen people advocate a spray form but haven't really looked into it.
also, why do you ppl spell it veg*n?(yes, I am new to this!! LOL)
The * is a wildcard -- veg*n covers vegans, [ovo|lacto]vegetarians, etc.

I drink chocolate soy drink. Half a litre of this has 100% of my daily need. So it's pretty easy to cover that.

jonesing4wind, veg*n written like this is used when referring to both vegans and vegetarians. The asterisk (*) is used as a place marker for the missing letters from both words.
...And as far as B12 goes, I get mine from a multivitamin (Pioneer 1+ Vegetarian Vitamin & Mineral to be exact).

Well, good luck on your veg*n lifestyle! :D

I use Nature Made Super B-Complex, I believe. I'm not quite sure of that brand name though. And I also take a vegan multi that has everything you could possibly need in there, including extracts from foods such as kelp, berries, and so on. It's really awesome and geared toward someone with a veg lifestyle, so it has more of some vitamins and less of others. I forget the brand though. It has a giant V on the front and I got it at a hfs. I also take selenium once in a while if I feel the need.

I use the B12 spray I got from missleigh's website, cosmosveganshoppe.com.

I eat B12 fortified foods, and I also take "Origin" brand Vitamin B-12. I've read that you shouldn't trust your B12 just to fortified foods like nutritional yeast, soymilk, tofu and meat analogues, so I also take the vitamin from time to time as a back-up.

My B12 levels are really low, so I get B12 shots once a month.
I also take a sublingual tab. Don't know what brand, and it tastes sorta nasty, so I may change..

My soy milk contains B12. I should probably take some kind of tablet, I'll get on that.

personally, i now eat eggs and raw dairy products (unpasturized).

prior, i consumed fortified soy milk with b12 (cynocobalamin). i now realize that i also needed a sublingual tablet because of absorption issues related to b12. cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin, the two primary sources for b12 that comes from yeast and are used in supplements, shots, and fortifications, do not absorb as well as cobalamin--the form that comes from animal products. So, if the RDA of b12 per day is 4 micrograms, it takes something like 1000 micrograms of cyanocobalamin to absorb this amount. it takes slightly less methylcobalamin. Yet, on packaging, cobalamin, cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin are all called "b12" and in a cereal that says "100% RDA of B12" usually means 4 micrograms of cyanocobalamin. Since it's cyanocobalamin and not cobalamin, only a fraction of that 4 micrograms is absorbed. Obviously, you'd need a lot of fortified foods to get enough cyanocobalamin to get enough b12.

Multivitamins may be different. read the package and it'll usually tell you whether it's using methyl or cyano b12. it will also tell you the amount in micrograms in the vitamin. if it's 1000 or so, then you're probably in good shape. If it's less, then you may wnat to move to a sublingual tablet--which is considered the second best way, after injections, to get b12. These tabets are often cyanocobalamin and usually come in the 1000 microgram amounts.

Good luck!

A daily multivitamin, + the occasional nutritional yeast.

I take the Twin-Lab vegetarian B12 dots. I also occasionally eat fortified foods and nutritional yeast, but not with enough regularity to feel that I could safely do without the supplement.

I take a B-12 suppliment from GNC. I'll admit, I don't take it everyday.....I probably should though.

Other forms of B-12 I obtain through fortified grains and soymilk mostly.

I drink fortified soy milk and eat fortified veggie deli slices and ground round. I'd also recommend that once you've been eating veg*n for awhile(a month or so), you see your doctor and get your B12 and hemoglobin levels checked.

Zoebird (or anyone else): is cyanocobalamin absorbed poorly accross-the-board by everyone, or do some people have more difficulty with this than others? My supplement is cyanocobalamin, and the dosage is so high that I was taking only one-half a tablet every few days. Ever since you mentioned in one of your posts that cyanocobalamin is not necessarily equivalent to cobalamin (microgram for microgram), I've been trying to learn about this.

I know that pernicious anemia used to be caused by an inability to absorb B12, not a lack of B12 in the diet. When B12 was discovered, and administered by injection, that type of anemia was easily cured, although it was formerly fatal.

The only other supplement I believe I might need is calcium, and I don't take that every day either.

tom:

it's across the board. I'll do a search for one of my posts about it.

here's the initial post: http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showpost.php?p=933581&postcount=3

What do YOU do for B12?

Is this like "What would you do for a Klondike bar?"

For B12, I'd jump through flaming hoops of tofu! :nana:
