I was talking to my friend today about animal crulity and we started talking about rodeio horses(but shes for the rodeio not ageast it) but she said that if a horse is not good at the task its suppose to do in the rodeio then it gets sold at auction and is used for alot of things sometimes they are sold as a "pasture pal" were they keep another horse compiny in the pasture so it wont get loneley, they also may get sold for dog food I said that can't be true now I thought they made it ieleagle or something, she said "what do you think you feed your dog" I answer "lamb" she told me that that may be what the packege says on it but thats not nesasarly is it or it may be a mix of horse and lamb but the chances of it just being lamb is vary low. shes telling the truth shes grown up with the rodio so she knows all about it. any comments?

I hadn't heard that about rodeo horses. In a perfect world, it would be nice for it to be illegal for them to be mistreated like that, but, unfortunately...
Wikipedia has a few things to say, but doesn't answer questions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_food
When calves grow to exceed the maximum weight requirements for calf roping, they are sent off to a feedlot to be fattened up for beef. Because virtually all of the animals used in rodeo will eventually be slaughtered for human or pet food, their long-range well-being is not a concern. This includes horses, whose flesh is exported to Europe and Japan for meat. Many severely injured animals are shipped directly to slaughterhouses.

The quote above is from that link, which is a long article about rodeos and cruelty. It has a list of sources on the bottom.
Edit: I just noticed your username and went to look at your profile. I love Full Metal Alchemist. :smitten: Excellent anime.

rodios are so evil, can't get that threw people heads tho
That's why when I buy food for my pets, I read the labels. The good ones will specify their meat sources (e.g. "chicken meal"), the not-so-good ones will say something like "animal meal". "Animal" can be anything - I have heard accusations that roadkill goes into pet food, but I am not sure that is true. There is also discussion about how euthanised pets go into pet foods, chemicals, flea collars, and all. The book in which this is discussed is called "Food Pets Die For". There are also many websites dedicated to the discussion. I would not be the least bit surprised if horses went into pet food. But really, is this any worse than cows going into pet food?

There's vegetarian food out there as well, might be tough to get your dogs to eat it exclusively, but you can cut it intothe regualr food.

Yeah, I accompany my MIL to horse auctions once in a while. some of the bidders intend to use them for human consumption, others for pet food. Mostly they get sold as pleasure horses though.
Oh, I hate rodeos. The thing that gets me is the calf roping. Not that it's the worst thing that happens to these poor animals...especially after they leave the rodeo circuit....but it just makes me cringe to see people cheering it on. How would *they* feel if the were running full speed and someone lassooed them around the neck and jerked them off their feet???
I have been looking into vegan pet food....anyone know of any good ones, reasonably priced?? I often give our dogs cooked veggies, pasta and brown rice....but it's hard to do that every day when you have 7 dogs!
BTW, a word of caution......never give your dog alot of Broccoli if you want to be able to breathe in your home....LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!

I have a book about cats and it has a chapter about what to with your cat after has died along with cremateing them and burying them it gives info on how to "rendure" and sell them as pet food

wouldn't thast be unhealthy for an animal that IS suppose to eat animals? unlike humans who don't have to eat meat to live, dogs are carnavores not omnivores like humans are.

Actually, dogs are omnivores, and like humans, they can quite easily survive on a properly balanced vegetarian diet (much easier to convince them to eat it in kibble form, of course!)
Cats, however, are carnivores. They require taurine, which is only found in meat. Luckily, taurine can be synthesized and added to vegetarian cat foods to make them complete. (Anyone feeding their cats a homemade vegetarian diet would have to supplement).
So you could feed your dog or cat a vegetarian kibble and be fairly confident that it is nutritionally complete (as it is required to be so). If one was diligent enough, and knowledgeable about dog/cat nutrition, they could also feed a balanced vegetarian diet to their pet. The trouble, however, is getting your cat to eat it's vegetables!!!

Read "Foods Pets Die for" Once you have read that, you will start making your own dog food. I have been doing it for 5 years, wish I had started sooner. Also there is the Raw Food Diet (B.A.R.F.)- I know alot of traditional vets do not support it but naturopath vets do. I make my own dog food and feed my dogs raw chicken.

Oh, I'd say bull and bronco riding are much worse. How would they like it if someone pulled a noose around their balls and gave it a tug? I think I'd be a little irate too!
I was with a friend while she was buying dog food & she straight up picked up a can that said horse meat (& she bought it)I was so disgusted.

I vary much agree, thats why I always laugh when I see the "cowboys" get thrown off or hurt some how it serves them right, I don't know why my uncle or anyone else would watch such torture

My doggie's food. I've had him on it for a few months (February, I believe) and he has yet to wither away and die.
