View Full Version : Feel so bad for the dog next door

In a construction lot next to where I work, he's an Akita and it's so damn hot out, I've had the SPCA there a couple times, but since the basics are there, nothing can be done, legally anyway. Very sad, he's just 2, and seems destined to live a life of being alone nearly all the time, night and day :(

Can't you locate the dog's owner and talk to this person?
Aww, I know what you mean, my friends neighbor has a dog that's sooo skinny, he jumps through the fence in the ally and we feed him. She called the animal shelter like twice to check it out and both of them said they couldn't do anything because the dog had tags and was registered. Such bull****. :/
Thats so cruel and very frustrating. I suppose that someone is taking SOME sort of care for him or he would have been removed from the property, even though it may not be the best care for him. Maybe you could leave a care package for him of some toys, large water bowl and so on. Also, leave some information about not leaving dogs outside or something to that effect. I have been involved in situations like that and when the dogs were not removed, I was stunned and so sad. It's a shame....

The best thing to do is to talk to the owners.
I'm usually too chicken **** to do that though.
But there are many ways you could assist in enriching the dog's life, if you were able to get approval from the owners. At the top of the list, taking it for walks.

Oh, he's aware of my feelings regarding his confinement there, but he feels he's treated fine, and the SPCA can't do anything since he does receive the basics, just sad, the emotional welfare aspect is what's really lacking, and that's just not addressed in regards to a companion animal's needs.

You should check out www.dogsdeservebetter.org They give some suggestions, and will even send anonymous info to the 'owner'
'Take a stand when you see dogs living chained or penned. Speak gently to the caretakers, sharing your convictions and information about Dogs Deserve Better and ways they can improve life for their companion. Print out this chained dog flyer or .pdf letter in which we request that they rethink their decision. please, do NOT put letters directly in mailboxes, it is a violation of US Postal Code. Instead, check out our door hangers which can be hung over mailbox flags...) (Now available for penned dogs, and in Spanish as a Spanish flyer and Spanish letter...thanks to Jill Natowitz!).
If you are not comfortable approaching caretakers of chained dogs or penned dogs, use the doorhangers or send us the names and addresses of the caretakers and we will send information in the mail. You will remain anonymous...'

Well, let me ask this. Is the dog chained or penned? IF so, then a group I found on the web may be able to help you. The group is www.dogsdeservebetter.com and they are trying to educate the public about the plight of the chained and penned dog. They will even send a letter to the dog owner (a very well-written letter, i have looked at it) offering suggestions and even help in order to get the family dog moved indoors. All you need to do is provide them with an address and a small description of the situation in an e-mail. I just contacted them this morning regarding a chained dog down the road from me. Check out the page and good luck helping that baby. Update me please!!

Thanks for the link, he certainly does deseve better than a life spent doing little beyond seeking the warmest or coolest spot in the lot he can find, depending on the weather, and he gets sooooo little attention :(

I just wrote to the regional rep for the organization, explaining Smokey's plight, I'll keep us updated. Poor doggie, what a crap existence, dogs need company, my Oscar has to be around me as much as possible, they love us, why some people can't see that is beyond me.

I agree with kpickell, can you ask the owner if you can take the dog for a walk? Can you go down there and spend time with it? Poor thing. :(

I have NO PROBLEM talking to animal owners whom I feel is mistreating their animal. The animals have no voice, so I feel I have to do it for them. I may start out sweet, but it usually turns kinda heated. I don't care if they call me a nosey b*tch, because the next day when I go back to check on conditions, etc., they've improved.

I know how you feel.. it's hard to see an animal suffer where you can't do much. Over in the UK, I don't think the RSPCA can prosecute for neglect, only cruelty. It's ridiculous. I hope you can find out who owns the dog, and well done to you for being a caring person. :D

I have heard that there are dogs in similar situations that simply "disappear" This is a website for a more radical shelter in Vancouver - there is much info there about chained dogs.

Awesome links! Thanks for sharing.
I know you already talked to the owner but do you know anyone else bold enough to come forward and speak to this guy?Maybe the dog's owner would finally acknowledge his neglect if enough people spoke up.It's worth a shot anyway.

I'm in NJ, there really isn't anyone else I have to speak with him, and I feel like I know him well enough to be able to say that the more people tried to reason with him, the more unreasonable he'd likely be.
Today was brutal out here, 100 plus, hope he's doing 'ok' :(

When people like that disagree with me, it makes me happy. :)
It further clarifies that I am right, which I enjoy.

That is awful. There really needs to be a law against that. I mean, you don't just leave a kid in a heavy coat chained outside in a construction lot with only the basics. So sad. Hmm, I'd probably have slapped the owner by now for mistreating that poor dog, but perhaps you should try to convince the owner to care for them better. Or perhaps offer to buy the dog or something, if you can. That is so sad! :'(.
