I spotted this in the Minnesota Women's Press this morning. http://www.womenspress.com/newspaper/2005/2109news.html
Got more than milk?
Milk may do a body good, but it’s not the only—or even the best—source of calcium in the fight against osteoporosis. Results from the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study demonstrated that three glasses of milk a day couldn’t keep away the weak bones and tiny fractures that are the earmarks of the disease. In fact, that and another study both showed increased risk of fractures associated with higher dairy consumption.
Leafy greens, such as kale, broccoli and collards, offer calcium absorbability as high, if not higher, than milk, according to a report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Calcium-fortified orange juice is also a good source.
A host of other factors also affect bone density, including exercise, salt intake, smoking, alcohol and drugs. Protein plays a role too: diets high in protein, especially animal protein, are more likely to encourage calcium loss.
For more information, see the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine’s online fact sheet: www.pcrm.org/health/prevmed/strong_bones.html
Hooray for them! <clap clap>

I thought leafy green vegetables were about 3 cups have the same amount of calcium of a glass of milk and 3 cups of the vegetables have half the calories. In this case it might be better if I bought some calcium fortified drinks because I might not be getting enough calcium even though I am eating a lot more fruits and vegetables than I used to.

Nice to know they're brave enough to go up against the powerful (and evil in my opinion) American Dairy Association and post the results of that study... many organizations haven't.
GREAT research findings there. YAY! :bobo:
(And we as veg*ns can collectively say "I knew that"...)

I laughed when I saw this article, since I remember getting lectures from my grandmother since I was little (like 5 years old little) about how milk was extremely important for women and how I'd break my hip when I was older if I didn't have at least 3 cups of it a day (yes, I was 5. That's grandma for you  eh, what can you do? I love her anyway. ).
I have ALWAYS hated the taste of milk. Always. My mother used to FORCE me to drink milk because I refused to drink it. I remember once she actually stood over me and waited for me to drink it. I took a sip and spat it out and boy! was she furious! :grr:
She still thinks milk is a wonderful food, even though she has osteoporosis and I'm at risk for it.

I don't like the taste of plain cow milk either however I did like the flavored milks. I don't buy them but I do buy the flavored and original soy milks sometimes.
Food for thought: the Chair of Dietitians of Canada used to work for the dairy industry. She vehemently defends milk.
More food for thought (not a scientific study by far but I thought it was interesting):
At a conference supposedly on osteoporosis and bone health (in which above mentioned Chair spent the entire time vehemently defending milk to a roomful of dietitians and dietetic interns - essentially preaching to the choir, if you will), there was a set up where you could have your bone health tested. There were two people (females, early 20's) ahead of me that I paid attention to. The lady doing the test would first ask how good you thought your bones were, and if you were at risk for osteoporosis (i.e. is it in your family).
First person: "I drink lots of milk and exercise a lot and there is no osteoporosis in my family"
Result: "your bones are not as strong as they should be - they are below the recommended range"
Second person: "I drink at least a litre of milk a day and exercise every day. No history of osteoporosis"
Result: same as above.
Me: "I never drank milk, I still don't drink milk (other than soy milk very recently), there is osteoporosis in my family and I don't exercise as much as I should"
Result: "Your bone are right in the middle of the range of where they should be"
Coincidence???

my mom still tells me that my bones must be so brittle and that i'll probably have osteoporosis in ten years because i don't drink milk. the last time she told me this we were at the store and i'd just gotten some almond milk. i pointed out that it had calcium, and she said "not enough."

Oh dear
My pet peeve:
Me: I never drank milk because I hate it but now I drink soy milk and I like it - so I get my calcium.
Other: But that's just a SUPPLEMENT!!!
And the Vitamin D in milk isn't???

This post sounds like I could of written it. I used to wait for my mom to step out of the room for a minute and then I would pour my milk down the sink :juggle:
