Hi, I'm new here and wanted to say hello to everybody! I haven't been eating beef, chicken, turkey or pork for two weeks now. I was wondering if any of you also went this route as well, and how long it took you to "give up" fish. I feel bad that I still eat it! Any advise?

Hi Ktgrrl...... (Pronounced "Katie Grrrrrrl" by any chance?)
You've gotten off to a great start. Knowing how you feel about eating things like fish and other animals, I would say that you will probably quit them too when you're ready. I ate chicken for months after I originally had intended to go vegetarian, but then one day I got to the point where I could put it away. It took me around 5 months to do that. Congratulations on a great start, and thank you for joining us!

Thanks for the reply! I'm hoping it will come naturally, like my decision to stop eating all the other types of meat. I HOPE that one day the thought of eating fish will disgust me as much as everything else.
Oh, and you can prounce my name however you want! :) I normally think of it as "Katie-Girl" :)

Hi and welcome to VB. Personally I gave up fish at the same time as meat (though I was never a big fish person anyway so it was the easiest thing to give up!). But if gradually works for you, then go for it. Once you've adjusted to not eating meat then you'll probably find it easier to 'let go' of fish as well.

Hey!
You're off to a great start at least :P
I never ate fish, sometimes I would eat fishsticks.. when I was younger. but I personally always hated the taste of it.
So just try other things instead of it.. make dinners that you can't put fish into (: like stirfry!
I went vegetarian gradually. The last fish I had before officially becoming vegetarian was some canned tuna I still had in my pantry. Since I've never been a big fish lover, I don't miss it now. I backslid last year because I had another can of tuna in my pantry for a cleaning lady who abruptly quit, and I just went ahead and ate it. I wish I hadn't.
Oh, and by the way, Welcome to VB! :hi:

What are your reasons for going veg? Health? Ethics?
Just ease into it, do what you feel comfortable with. That'll help you make the biggest difference long-term. And you're already doing more than most people so that's something to feel good about. Focus on what you are doing and not what you aren't doing. I think you'll hit a point where you decide you just don't want it anymore.

I just started out by only eating seafood as I never was too much of a fan of other meats, but loved seafood, then one day I just up and quit that. I haven't really looked back since. Good luck. It'll come in due time.

My reasons are both health and ethics combined. For some reason, my brain has yet to realize that fish are animals too! I always put them in a seperate category in my mind. Maybe if I read some literature about the inhumane way fish are treated it would help?
I also stopped eating all other forms of meat besides fish for health reasons. Actually, meat in general just really began to disgust me to the point where I would almost have to "choke down" a sandwhich. I finally said,"This is ridiculous!" and stopped!
I really don't WANT to eat fish-so any info would be greatly appreciated!

i never liked fish, so it wasn't an issue for me. for me, i was vegetarian at home and omni whenever i ate with family (unless out to dinner, where i would order vegetarian). My parents were always into feeding my husband and I steak whenever we came over (because they knew we were struggling financially). So, i actually 'gave up' all other meats before i 'gave up' beef. But, i wasn't eating the beef because i longed for it or craved it, but because i didn't want to turn it down and cause disquiet between my parents and i (even though, when i eventually told them i was veg, it was no problem i had feared that it would be).
take your time, do your research, and don't worry about it. :)

I gave fish up becuase of the cholestrol. However, I had no cravings for it when I watched a fishing center filleting them on the docks and "cutting out" the parasites. eeeew!
Never wanted another piece after that!
Yup... I was a vegetarian when I took Parasitology a few years back for my degree, but if I hadn't been a vegetarian, I would have been by the end of it. There's all kinds of nastiness in meat, including fish. For example, cod worm. Yum!
