View Full Version : My co-worker had her cat killed.. and then replaced.

I am just going to take a moment to rant... so here goes:
About a two months ago, a co-worker by the name of Jen purchased a new puppy from a breeder. Less than a month later, she acquired a new kitten from a woman who's cat had had an unwanted litter of kittens. She already had a large black male cat of whom she had had for 7 years prior to all of this.
Soon after this new influx of animals, Jen began noticing problems with her older cat. He was becoming angry and very defensive toward people that would enter her home. He was still loving and affectionate toward Jen herself, but often attacked her new boyfriend... he once even drew blood. Soon Jen decided that she was going to have to put her cat down, because he was becoming a liability for her.
When Jen told me this, I told her to allow me to meet the cat before she even considered putting him down. I said that even though I'm not allowed to have cats in my current appartment, I would take him in and try to find a home for him FOR her, because this cat deserved better than to be killed. I explained that because she had never had problems with him BEFORE she took in all of these new animals and started dating this new guy, that he was probably just getting territorial and jealous.
About a week ago, Jen told me that she had noticed that her cat was being a bit nicer to her boyfriend.. so that she was 'probably going to just let things be.. and that she would probably keep him.' I told her that if she changed her mind, then she should call me and I would take him in.
Yesterday she came to work after having been gone for three days. Before she even saying 'hello' she told me that she.. and I quote..
"HAD to put him down on Friday. He kept attacking everybody.. and he was becoming a liability."
I proceeded to freak out and tell her that I would have taken him in and "why didn't you call me?!"
She didn't have a reason, but told me not to "worry about it. Because guess what? I went out on Saturday and bought a new cat.. he's black and white just like my other cat was.. but we named this one Moo like a cow. Isn't that cute?! I'll have to show you pictures of him when I get some!"
I have never been so furious in all of my life. I stormed away from her, and haven't said a word to her since.
How could this woman have so little regard for life?! How could she, after 7 years, just go out the next day after having her cat KILLED and replace him with a new cat? She is so #$%^ed up.

What the heck? Was is so hard to pick up the phone to call you?
I don't think I'd ever speak to her again. That's so, so sad. Poor kitty. :(

It's easy to criticise people. Try to think about it from her point of view.
...no, you're right, she's a pompous ass with sweaty dewflaps.

She seems like a heartless b*tch, also I am sure she knows that you are veg & an animal lover, which makes her suck all the more for telling you so callously.
Seems like she is an atrocious waste o' sperm.
Unfortunately, there are still plenty of people like that around. Like my parents.
This coworker of yours reminds me a little of my mother. When I moved out on my own, I had to leave my cat Elsa behind. My mother insisted that Elsa be outside most of the time, but didn't like the way the cat was urinating on the front door (probably traumatized because I was gone from her life). So without letting me know, they simply handed her over to their housekeeper, who had a dog. Well, the cat and dog didn't get along, and one day Elsa was attacked by the dog. She was apparently pretty severely injured. My parents never bothered to contact me about this, either. The housekeeper handed the cat back to my parents, but instead of spending money to try to take care of the cat, they opted to have her euthanized. I never knew the cat lost her life until I was at a restaurant with my family and I asked about Elsa. My mother, who was playing "tickle me" with my 2 year old nephew at that precise moment, oh-so-casually replied: "Elsa's dead." Just like that. She then continued to play with my nephew as if it meant nothing to her (or me). That's when I learned the details of what happened.
I will never forgive my parents for being so callous about my cat's life, and I will never allow them anywhere NEAR my two current furbabies as long as I can help it. :brood:

Wow, that sounds like my Dad when I was growing up. "Oh yeah, I ran over your cat this morning."
Yeah, my parents have never been "pet people". When Elsa had fleas, I took her to the vet for flea treatment, and my parents were so appalled by the amount of the vet's bill (probably the standard amount in the early 1980's), that my father said "Wouldn't it be cheaper just to put the cat down and get a new one?"
I'm sure he wasn't joking, either. :brood: He still makes occasional comments of that nature to me. The next time he does it, though, I'm gonna give him what-for. Don't care that he's my father and that he's 85 years old.

That's horrible. Just horrible.
It disgusts me that people can treat animal life, whether it be pet or livestock, as a comodity that can be replaced when it becomes inconvenient or old.
The poor stressed kitty needed love and patience, that's all.
That's just...awful. Especially when I think of all the people who have to go through putting a pet to sleep for real reasons and are completely heartbroken about it. That's just heartless of her. People like that should not have pets at all. Period.

People disregard for pets really saddens me.
My parents got rid of two cats when they were preggo with my brother. They did it while I was at school. "Mom, where's Spooky and Cleo"
"Daddy took them to the cat farm honey, so they will be happy with other kitties"
Props to my parents though for still feeling guilty about that 21 years later. I mean, they really loved those cats. They still talk about them, we still have pictures, etc. The kitties were actually taken to a no kill "cat house" type of shelter and found homes shortly after. The reason was fear of Toxoplasmosis while pregnant with my brother. My mom had it when she had me, became very ill, and almost lost me.
They do have a very happy 17 year old kitty (Sheba) and a gorgeous 14 year old dog (Cara)
This reminds me so much of the situation with my parents and their dog "Lady" who they had put down while I was in the process of finding her a new home. This precipitated a public fight in a restaurant after which I have not spoken to my folks except one time in an entire year. I still don't trust them, and tried to work on the problem through family counseling, which they grudgingly agreed to go to after eight months, they went one time and then said they couldn't continue because it was "too traumatic." So we're not talking now.

One that wants to make a sale.
What a %*#&@!
It's things like this that make me almost think that people shouldn't have pets.
The vet where my mom worked would refuse to euthanize animals. One time a lady and her kids wanted their cat put to sleep. "Why?" "It's getting old." the vet basically asked the woman if that was really the kind of attitude she wanted to teach her kids for when she got old.
I'm sorry, but the stories in this thread make me sick, disgusted, angry, arrrgh!!!!
How could anyone be so heartless, cruel, and totally lacking in empathy if not for the animals, then at least for people who care about them.
I'd have a hard time dealing with that woman at work after that. I certainly couldn't be friendly to her because all my respect would be replaced with repugnance.

wow.. that is awful. all my pets are like family members, always have been since i was little, so it's hard for me to wrap my mind around this kind of complete disregard for life, whether human or animal. seriously, people who think of pets as objects that can be thrown out and replaced should not be allowed to have pets, or allowed to spawn for that matter. ugh.

My god....such blatant disregard for an innocent soul. Let's just hope that the kitty haunts her for a little while and the b*tch wakes up to find her rug shredded, potted plants used for a litter box, knick knacks broken and lying on the floor, the arms of her favorite chair used as a scratching post, cat piss on the carpet, paper trash scattered all over the bathroom floor, and an unopened bag of cat food chewed into and the dry food scattered all over the kitchen floor.

yeah, I hate people like that,
once there was this stray cat who would pick on my cat he was much bigger then her so he would be vary scary, he was annoying but I didn't want what happend to him happen. one day my mom was complaining about this cat to a naihber at that moment the naiber didn't say anything out of the norm, a few weeks later we start to notice the cat is missing we were realy not that worryed about it we just figured it went off to bully someone else. our naiber comes over and said something like "havn't seen that cat around have you?" my moms like "no I was wondering were it just went off to" then the naiber said "don't worry I Took care of it" she shot the cat,
that same person also had a litter of puppys and she drowned them she even waited till they were a few months old so they could have a real good struggle together. somepeople are just evil

What a cold-blooded bitch. If one of my friends did that I would have a difficult time speaking to them because I would lose sooo much respect for them...she should not have pets!
