Hello,
I just came abord to the vegetarian diet. I have some questions...
Today I tried a vegetarian boca burger and I did like it, however, I feel a little nausiated after eating it. Is that normal? Is there anything that someone can recommend to help me along?
Also, I have never tried tofu. Is there anything taste wise it can be compared to?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Michael

Welcome! :)
No, that shouldn't be normal. Some people have said they're allergic to soy, do you know for sure that you're not? If so I would think it's just a coincidence. Boca are my favorite veggie burger, I think a lot of people here prefer them, but you might want to try another brand. Morningstar Farms and Gardenburger are available at most grocery stores. There are also several types - cheeseburger, vegetable medley, tomato & basil, etc.
Tofu doesn't really have much of a taste, it basically absorbs the flavor of whatever it's cooked with. If you've never had tofu a good place to start would be a Chinese restaurant, most offer several tofu dishes (it may be called bean curd). You can get it steamed or fried (personally I don't like fried tofu).

I have never eaten a veggie burger, so I have no idea, sorry.
But tofu I just started making tofu a couple weeks ago.. it tastes like nothing.. but it is good. I put mine in stirfry and it has the texture of meat and tastes like whatever I put in there, so basically its just like having chicken stirfry.

welcome. :)
You just need to be detoxicated. No worries. :D

tofu is good, I've had it in chillie and its realy good, it sokes up the flaver of whatever its cooked in so in that case just think of chillie, I've also had it in chinese vegetarian wontons and it was suposse to taste like chicken which it may or may not have after 8 months I think I've forgotten what it tastes like(Im sooo fine not knowing anymore)

Personally I think tofu tastes a bit like mushrooms, but it absorbs the flavor of whatever it's cooked with. I like Michael's idea of going to a Chinese place. I like tofu and broccoli the bestest.
Was that burger the most soy you've ever eaten in one place? You may be intollerant/allergic. :(

It was the most I have eaten at one time, but after researching a bit I see that soy is in a lot of foods that I eat regularly, like peanut butter. So I was confused as to why I felt nausious.

i think tofu tastes nutty or beany and is kinda spongey.
but then, i don't eat it plain anyway, when i do eat it. which is rarely.

Try Gardenburger "Vegetable Medley." I promise you'll enjoy that one. Gardenburger products, in general, are really tasty. My bf loves their chic patties....

Welcome to VB. :hi:
fwiw, Bocas do the same thing to me. I just can't eat them because they're too real to me and I end up feeling ill. Maybe this is what's happening to you?

Hmm. I don't think nausea is ever a good thing. If something makes you ill, stop eating it. Might be a hidden food allergy, might be contamination of some kind in the burger - nausea is a sign that your digestive system doesn't like what you've put in it, and I think it's a good reason to stop poisoning yourself with whatever it is.
Fortunately, it is possible to be vegetarian without ever ingesting a "meat substitute".
