As I was walking around today I came across an excavation site that I hadn't yet seen. As I peered down into it, I saw the usual temple ruins, but walking and laying amoungst the bits of rock were several cats. After seeing about two dozen cats, I noticed a sign that mentioned the place being a cat sanctuary and there was some stairs going down into the site.
I walked down below where there was a little garden and table with cat related souvenirs. Next to it, and underneath the street, was a veterinary. I went inside and there was a wonderfully knowledgable volunteer who told me that the site now has over 350 cats. They name, register, spade, neuter, and vaccinate all of the animals, and nurse any sick ones back to health. It's ran entirely by volunteers and donations.
I wish I had bumped into the place earlier because I would have loved to volunteer there. The animals were all so sweet and there were so many of them everywhere. I easily could have stayed there all day! It was also a strange and nice juxtaposition to see animals walking freely around a monument that would normally just sit there looking pretty. It's nice that the place gets a bit of new life put into it.
In any case, here's the site: http://www.romancats.de/
I'll have some pictures in a few weeks. :)
