So, I know nothing about gardening, but I'm eager and I have a patch of earth about 6 foot by 2 foot and plenty deep. I live in North-East England. Any ideas on what edible stuff I can plant at this types of year? That is easy to grow?

You can probably start putting in a fall/winter garden now, so, try carrots, lettuce, cabbages, beetroot, silverbeet (chard), spinach, onions, garlic, turnips.

Turnips roots and greens are good idea. Small fast-growing varities take only about 30 to 50 days to mature. Beet root may not mature before frost, at which point it will be too late. Same with carrots. Heading cabbage -- I'm not sure it will head if you put it in at this point. I'm not sure but I think non-heading varieties (collards) may continue to grow even if the temp is slightly below freezing for a few hours per day. Typical varities take 67 to 75 days to mature, so they'll mature by early october if you plant now. Not sure if it is too late or not.
