A new ad campaign urges Hollywood celebrities to give up their support of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in light of the 62 felony animal cruelty charges brought against two of the organization's employees.
The ad in the special "Annual Philanthropy Issue" of Variety magazine lists the names of 50 celebrities on the honorary committee for PETA's 25th anniversary celebration and advises: "If your name is on this list, fire your publicist."

The campaign was launched by the Foundation for Biomedical Research, the nation's oldest and largest organization "devoted to promoting public understanding, respect and support for humane and responsible animal research."
Heh. These are the same people who defend and excuse HLS despite numerous undercover investigations showing extreme and senseless abuse of the animals there. They can't even cop to egregious abuse that is clearly outside the realm of science or research (like punching 4 month old beagle puppies in the face and dissecting a conscious monkey into death).
I'm not keen on PETA, and if I were a celebrity, i wouldn't lend my name to them. I would, however, lend my name to the vegetarian society and other organisations.

PETA has done some odd things that can be literally embarrasing to an AR person, but they are the biggest and most visible group and try to keep the issues media worthy, so for me they're kind of a mixed bag.
" The campaign was launched by the Foundation for Biomedical Research,"
Now that is a group doing truly evil things.

Afte thinking about this, I wonder if the people involved aren't actually 'plants'; the biomed community has seen several such people infiltrate their labs and report on what really goes on behind closed doors, maybe they've decided to do the same to discredit the AR community.

I agree with you...but hey, being in it isnt all its cracked up to be. So...:book: Im gonna go read more posts before i piss someone off here....Sorry. :p
Organized targeting of celebrities who support PETA and AR issues is nothing new. There was a similar push in the early 90's, which seems to be the last time that anti-AR front groups were in the full-scale media war that they are in now.
Started by representatives of the US's largest supplier of live animals to labs, the idea that FBMR is truly concerned about dead stray dogs and cats is laughable. The group has fought every legislative attempt to improve the welfare of animals in labs. It also staunchly defends all animal research labs, especially after they've had cruelty complaints filed against them.
