i was wondering - well, lets backtrack a little. iheard about how this one guy bought a bunch of lobsters to set them free... i mean, i knew that people did this, but i remember hearing this on tv once - he's pretty fameous so it was on tv... but anyway, i started to think... does that do anything besides save those few lobers lives??? i mean, all the company that catches them cares about is profit,

so as long as the lobsters were bought, and not stolen, the company actually made money off of this. right???

so isnt that person contributing to the lobster killing in a way???

.... is it worth saving a few lives if it's going to contribute to the company that catches them expanding, and catching even more??? (i'm exadurating a little)

He's encouraging the practice of catching them by doing that, and chances are that they'll end up being caught again.

Lobsters grow slowly and when allowed to, live for decades and get quite large. They've been so extensively harvested that it's rare to see one 2' long these days.

I agree that it seems like a nice thing to do, but that it doesn't help lobsters at all. Not only does it encourage more lobsters to be caught but most likely they lobsters he sent back into the ocean were very ill from the stress of captivity and probably didn't make it. Its a sad thing all around.

Disease/parasite transmission due to captive conditions is also a reason to not rerelease them

I think you raise an interesting point!

I used to mystery shop for a large supermarket chain. I was required to buy something at the deli (sliced) and something at the seafood counter.

I used to get cheese (I'm vegetarian not vegan), and a few clams. I live on the coast of Maine (where the clams were dug) and I'm literally 100 feet away from murky water (half salt/half fresh - fine for clams). So, I'd buy the clams because I was required to buy from the seafood department, then toss them in the water.

I was wondering about the impact on the pocket book of the grocery store - I was still "buying" them (reimbursed for them by the mystery shopping company), so it increased the demand, thus the supply.

I ended up calling PETA and talking it over with them. They told me that it was best NOT to do that - yes, I was "saving" them, but it was in fact increasing the demand and showing these grocery stores that people will buy the clams and other seafood from them...

So, upon their advice, I quit doing the mystery shopping for that particular business, and I feel better doing so.

Speaking of lobsters, and of PETA - I got an email from them two days ago - they're coming to Maine for a lobster protest. They were looking for areas here in Maine that those of us who live here thought would be good for the protest - I called Karin (the manager of the protest at PETA) and talked with her - told her the area I thought was best (the Old Port in Portland)...she is going to be coming up on August 8th - I'm SO going to be there!! :)
