hi again! my diet before going vegetarian (starting today) included having dinner with no bread/potato/rice/tortilla of any kind (however, i only eat whole grains). do you think this is still possible to maintain this with vegetarianism? or is it even healthy to try to maintain it with being a vegetarian?
thanks for the help

Carbs are your friends! I'd starve to death without my carbs. I don't think it's very healthy to have any sort of diet while cutting them out to a large extent, is it?

if you are still eating other grains, it doesn't seem to me like it cuts out that much. why don't you eat brown rice?

if you eat other whole grains, and then also eat beans, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables--and particularly if you're going to include eggs and dairy products--then you should be fine.
i eat very little bread, rice, etc. i do eat tortillas though. :)
i'm sure it's possible but it seems like a nightmare to me :)
... sorry, i know i'm no help

haha, no it's fine. thank you for the responses.
I just don't like to eat them for dinner specifically because i feel the vegetables i eat (which is A LOT esp. at dinner time) more than make up for the lack of bread/rice/potato. during the day i do not spare on the breads and tortillas, etc..
i may start introducing a bit of those during dinner, i'll have to see how the first couple days go.
any other perspectives welcomed!

I'm a newby too :hi: . I do not eat processed foods, so the pasta, and bread are out for me too. Rice is a whole grain if you buy it with its husk on--brown in other words. If you have an Oriental market in your area you can get Forbidden rice or Thai black rice which is purple. I never buy supermarket rice--it is flavorless to me. Also sweet potatos or yams are much more benificial nutritionally than white supermarket potatoes. I think it is relitively easy to avoid the bread, tortillias, (white supermarket starches) like white rice and white potatoes, as well as pasta. I also frankly do not like vegetables which have been so genetically altered that they become as sweet as a Pepsi like some of these sweet corns. There are also dozens of whole grains that can take the place of rice if it is totally off your list. Barley, quiona, buckwheat grotes :smitten: . My opinion of the "Carb" threat is that if you exersise sufficiently, eat small meals, and don't overload on sugars (like soda, twinkies, bread which are "vegitarian") carbs (which are sugars molecularly) are not going to bother you unless you have a specific medical ailment in which these things are off limits.

Why are you not eating those things? Are you watching your weight? What are you using for your main source of caloric value? (Sorry for my skepticism but having known too many people with EDs in my time, I have to ask)
One can not live on veggies alone...

You're still eating brown rice, beans, quinoa, and stuff like that, right? Are you just avoiding "white" carbs? More power to ya!

IMO, corn tortillas are better than flour ones. Less is stripped away in the process than with flour tortillas.

As others have said - I think you can do whatever you "want" though certainly the whole grains are benficial for you... some moderation is good in all areas of your diet however - yes, there's even such a thing as too many vegetables...
Try new and different ways to get those grains; Black India Rice, whole wheat tortillas (or corn), quinoa, spelt bread, buckwheat pasta - and as mentioned above, sweet potatos or yams are wonderful in any way that you'd regularly use "white" potatoes...
(though in the case of potatoes, unlike bread and rice and pasta, remember that "white" does not mean that all the beneficial ingredients have been removed... white potatoes are still plenty nutritious)

Many raw fooders eat no grains at all and little starch and do just fine.

IN general, I think avoiding grains for just one meal a day is fine, as long as you get plenty throughout the rest of the day.

bread/potato/rice/tortilla
Are you avoiding processed grains or all grains? There are whole grain versions of bread (whole wheat, oat, etc), pasta (whole wheat), rice (brown) and tortillas (corn) which are readily available/make-able, not to mention other less popular grains. You don't have to eat all whole grains to be healthy, but mostly is definately good. Whole grains give certain vatamins and minerals which can be a bit tricky on a vegan diet.

it seems some people are missing what i am saying. I DO eat "carbs" at least the whole grain ones during the day except for my dinner meal. I have not jumped into veganism, so i don't have to worry about that yet in reference to what hummusisyummus said.
bstutzma- I was watching my weight, now I am just content with maintaining. i would say my main source of caloric value would be whole grains (breakfast, lunch), beans, veges, fruits, eggs, milk.... everything except meat! haha. sorry if i missed the point of what you were asking, just let me know.
cluricane - i'm going to make some homemade sweet potatos fries tomorrow : ) i can't wait.
