I noticed the "is meat healthy?" thread and I first thought, "who cares if its healthy or not? None of us eat it anyway, each for our own reasons." Then I began to wonder about those few people who DO go vegetarian, and I mean, REAL vegetarian, for health reasons? Are people like this more likely to "stray" from vegetarianism because of news articles promoting the healthfulness of certain meat items?

And then I wondered, who is really the most likely to "give up" and leave vegetarianism? Is it really the health vegetarians, or someone else?

So I thought I'd post this as a poll and see what you guys think.

Because you've included the "teenage fad" option, I don't think one will get very illuminating results (i.e. those about health, ethical and environmental veg*ns).

"And then I wondered, who is really the most likely to "give up""

Personally I see nothing to "give up" to so i imagine I will never go back. Leaving the expanding boundaries of veganism is incredibly unlikely in my case. It's important that veggies feel that their lifestyle is a good thing even from a purely personal level of having enjoyable things to eat and fun.

If anyone feels like they might "give up" , then they should address perhaps finding more things they enjoy about veing veggie. Once they find this, theere is nothing to give up.

Other: the ones who went veg for a boyfriend/girlfriend and have just broken up.

When you say "real" vegetarian, for health reasons, are you suggesting that those who are vegetarian for other reasons are not "real" vegetarians? :notvegan:

I'm not sure I really understand the point of this thread/poll. So what if people give up being vegetarian? It's their choice. And people who decide to go veg without being really committed to it are not doing themselves any favors. Yes, they may be doing something for the animals, but those aren't the kinds of vegetarians I want representing me to the non-vegetarian world. Since these are the vegetarians who are more likely to give up being vegetarian than those ARE truly committed to it, it makes all of us look flaky and makes the veg diet look "too hard". (I can hear the whining from the ex-veggies even now as I type). As far as I'm concerned, if their heart really isn't in it, then they may as well stay omni.

I chose "other" because I believe the first likely to give up, are the ones who jump in both feet first and get very militant about it. Once the "edge" is gone, or the novelty is lost....there ya go.

I chose teenage fad vegeterians. Fads wear out quickly.

I chose "other" for fish-eating "vegetarians". They never were vegetarians.

I would've chosen trendy fad vegetarians if the teenage clause wasn't added, cause I think trendy vegetarians don't only exist in teenage format. Why you gotta be hatin on the teenagers, yo?

Why is it that 3 people claim to have chosen Other but only two voted that way? :stinkeye:

newstars- That's very true. Many adults are just as worried about appearing trendy as some teenagers are. Of course, it isn't an issue at my school because vegetarianism isn't trendy. :(

One is obviously an imposter

"Imposter" should have been one of the choices on the list :naughty:

Find the imposter! Let's see...borealis didn't say she voted, she just said Other:__________, so I think she may be the fake.

Considering that voting "other" demands an explanation anyway, I daresay it's hardly worth registering a vote for it. But I did anyway.

Hmmm...well, it's Annie or borealis, then.

Well we shall use old-time logic and throw them both in the lake ..... the one that is the imposter would survive ..then we'd know for sure

I can see a couple of reasons why vegetarians would care about whether or not meat is healthy:

1) Ammo for discussing with a curious omni. Especially if it's a friend or family member who is concerned about his/her health, and has come to you, the vegetarian. Wouldn't it be nice to have some great, accurate facts on whether or not meat is "healthy"?

2) On the flip side, if the vegetarian has a close friend/family member who eats meat a lot but refuses to change. It would be reassuring to know that meat at least isn't as unhealthy as you think. If it was healthy, at least.

Other: You are placing too much importance on the reason for beginning something.

Other, any of the one's listed if they are unable to think for themselves or stick to a thought.

Assuming thinking for themselves brings them to the conclusion they want to be veg*n . . .

I would say the type who are pressured into doing more than they are ready to. That's why I don't like the "all or nothing" approach a lot of people push.

Kimberly

I agree with Michael. Strong-arming or pressuring someone is not a true victory. The best is when someone decides of their own will that veg*nism is something they want to try.

I also do not see the point in judging someone's personal foray into veg*nism. I know there are many people here who went veg*n in their teens and have remained so well into adulthood; and there are those of us who went veg*n overnight who will never again eat meat or dairy or eggs (or whatever it may be), and really, the only way to prove it is to come back to this forum after sixty years of a veg*n life and say "I told you so." :p

Being upset at someone who eats fish and calls themselves a vegetarian, that is different (that is someone appropriating the title while not living the lifestyle); but if someone is actually vegetarian, then I'm not going to care how they got there. Why should I? The only reason I can think of is to feel better about myself and my reasons in becoming veg*n; but I already feel great about my decision. :D

I chose health vegetarians because it reminds me of people who complain that they don't feel healthy as a vegetarian so they quit. Other times they don't feel healthy as a meat eater but they don't go like I don't feel good maybe I should stop eating meat. If they go vegetarian and don't feel well they go like it is because there is something in meat that I need so I will just eat organic chicken.

Ha ha -- I didn't know failing to vote would produce this much consternation. I had to answer the phone or something, then forgot to come back. :p
