I'm fairly new to this too, but I do know the answers to these!
veg*n is a short and way of saying "vegetarian and vegan", or a way to be non-specific about the type of vegetarian you're talking about.
Omni=omnivore=nonvegetarians (meat-eaters)
Gelatin is made from animal bones. Some healthfood stores sale gummy bears without gelatin, but I don't know if they taste the same.

Unfortunately, this is true. Gelatin is cartilidge or tendon, I am afraid. Some members on here could help you out with some good alternative "gummy bears" that don't contain gelatin however. (Yeah, I know. I loved gummy bears too.)

"Lets Do...Organic" has a nice gummy bear box. They taste like diet gummy bears, as they are made w/ fruit juice, but they hit the spot sometimes.
However, I think they are outrageously expensive.

You might want to try Dots, they don't have gelatin and should be readily available (and fairly inexpensive).

Not as good or sour but still quite tasty:

Oh for the love of god does no one read their labels any more? Yes, most brands of gummy bears have gelatin in them... (hasn't this been covered at LEAST thirty-eleven times on here before?)

Check for fruit snacks too. You know, the ones that are gummy like in the little packets shaped like dinosaurs or princesses, etc. Some of those don't have gelatin and have fruit pectins in them instead. Still sugary junk, but without the hoof jelly.

Re: Gummi Bears - Try Sharkies Organic fruit chews. They're shark shaped, mind you (not bear shaped)... but so much more delicious than I ever remember gummi bears being.

Yes. I rather enjoy them too. :(
Gummy Bears (for the most part, traditionally) contain gelatin which is made from animals. :(
On a commercial scale, gelatin is made from by-products of the meat and leather industry, mainly pork skins, pork and cattle bones, or split cattle hides. Contrary to popular belief, horns and hooves are not commonly used. The raw materials are prepared by different curing, acid, and alkali processes which are employed to extract the dried collagen hydrolysate and which may take several weeks. The worldwide production amounts to 250,000 tons per year.

This thread has made me decide to give up gelatin! I guess no more gum for me, but that's okay, it kind of gives me headaches. That can't be good!

"Gum" is different from "Gummy Bears". Gummy bears are a gelatin product and gum is a tree sap product (though you should read labels because some gum may contain gelatin, though it's not an essential ingredient).

They aren't that cheap, but they are good and pretty. You will also be supporting vegan business and not 'the man.'
