This is a shock to read and sad news .... I just watched an old episode of Star Trek yesterday and Scotty was in it and I remember thinking for a second about him having alzeimhers amongst other problems ... he was a great character in a classic science fiction show and an icon of modern popular media history.

Apparently smoking saved his life on the shores of France in the D-Day Normandy invasion where he was a Canadian soldier .... his cigarette case stopped a bullet to the chest .

Geez, I didn't know he was born here in Vancouver.

I grew up watching the Star Trek movies. I loved his character. But to make it to 85 is a good thing. :)

I remember when I saw the documentary "Trekkies" Doohan came across as the person I'd most like to meet.

I also had the opportunity to meet him and get his autograph at a convention back in the '90's. He wasn't in a very good mood that day (he yelled at the audience and said to stop sending fan mail to his home address  ) but I could tell that he was a nice man at heart.

RIP, Scotty. Until the next, we'll keep trying to change the laws of physics.

James has a five year old daughter. I bet there are tons of people who will be happy to tell her about daddy.

I am sorry to learn of his death. The news article mentions that he was a busy character actor before "Star Trek," but I don't recall seeing him in any other roles in movies or TV.

Whoa! Depressing information!

I've seen Deforest Kelly in non-StarTrek parts, mostly westerns.

I got to meet Walter Koenig in the 1980s as a result of winning a "Blockbuster" grand opening drawing. He was a nice fellow to talk with. He had no accent whatsoever, or, at most, a California accent. But his parents emigrated from Russia, so I guess that is where he modeled the accent from.

I did a search on this news in google groups and there are so many various and totally unrelated messageboards with posts about this that it's obvious his impact as a popular character of modern culture is quite impressive.

I even searched in other languages. One Italian post had all these sad smilies such as below.

:°(

I myself watched an episode of Star Trek TOS off DVD tonight ... "The Balance of Terror" . Scotty was in it quite a bit but not saying much. Anyway it's a really great episode IMHO

"Walter Koenig ...... He had no accent whatsoever"

He was great as the sinister psi-cop in Babylon 5 , Mr Bester . No sign of any accent there.

"Scripts of the sci-fi series reveal that his character, Montgomery Scott, was born in Linlithgow in 2222 and that his parents still lived there.

West Lothian Council plans to erect a plaque in the town in memory of the Canada-born actor who died, aged 85."
