:help:

As many of you know by now, I work at burger king. I work there 3-5 days a week, usually about 4. Each day I eat there I get a free meal plus when I get perfect drawers (cash register) I get a free meal. So I end up eating there a lot, 4-7 times a week usually. Now that I went veggie, does anyone here know what I can have?
meals include a sandwich, side dish (fries, onion rings, sidesalad), and a drink (pop or water...i don't think they'll let us have coffee or milk, orange juice, etc.)
What I know I can have:
BK Veggie (veggie pattie, it has carrots and stuff in the patty)
Veggie whopper (whopper w/o meat basically)
Caesar/Garden salad w/o meat
side salad
drink
Not sure:
fries
onion rings
hershey sundae pie

Anything else you know I can/can't have other than obvious no's (like a hambuger for example)?

Also, can I have stuff with gum in it? And gelatin's a nono right? and why is that? what else common stuff can't i have? like animal by products?

Thanks in advance! :bobo: :vebo: :nana:

Gelatin is made from animal tissues, so thats a vegetarian no-no. If the fries and onion rings are cooked separately from the meat and are not flavored with meat, I don't see them being a problem.

ETA: You might want to check the ingredients on your ceasar salad dressing. Sometimes they contain anchovies.

I'm a vegetarian (not vegan), and I will eat deep fried stuff that has been cooked with meat. Just to give you a different point of view. And I think the fries and the onion rings are both vegetarian.

I would recommend not even eating there. It is just really horrible stuff & is going to do your body no good to eat all that junky crap. If there are people you could bring it to or those less fortunate, give it to them.

Well, it's free and maybe the poster doesn't have a lot of money? Heck, maybe the poster is one of these less fortunate people? In any case, I'm certain that he/she knows its not the greatest food option. Do what you can with what you've got I suppose.

It's not easy working in fast food and not eating the food there. Been there, done that. The healthiest option for you there would probably be the BK Veggie with a side salad. Definitely avoid drinking soda--water or fruit juice is a much better bet. That said, you shouldn't just eat it all the time even if it's free. "Free" doesn't include the toll eating fast food nearly everyday (healthier veg options or not) will take on your health. Maybe once or twice a week get something if it's offered, but after that, start bringing food from home with you to work. Leftovers from the night before, some fresh fruit, veggies with a low-fat dip, veggie sandwiches, homemade salads (there's so much more to salad than your typical side salad!), etc.

I agree with the above two posters, just because you get a free meal doesn't mean you have to eat it. I get a free meal every night at Popeyes, but I never ate it. *All their food is fried in beef fat, so there isn't anything really for me to eat, except cole slaw and mac and cheese*

Not saying if you are there and it is convienent, it's wrong to eat there, but it would be more healthy to bring your own food, and once in a while eat something there.

BK fries and onion rings are ok if you still eat eggs.
hershey sundae pie should be ok.
check the ingredients on your ceasar salad dressing, if it contains anchovies, it's a no.

i agree with a few posters above that you shouldn't eat there all the time. i understand that free food is free food but seriously eating at a major fast food chain 4-7 times a week is a little too much for your body to take. how about bringing some bread and hummus or i dunno leftovers to work ? it's so much healthier than eating there all the time....

Heres what we choose from at Burger King when I take my boys there once in a while ( a few times a month) from Burger King:

BK Veggie burgers
fries
onion rings
dutch apple pies
salads
French toast sticks
hash browns

they are all vegan from what I can tell

I agree with the others who said its better to not eat there every night .. but I know you are not making a whole lot of money working there.

you can go to a website www.peta.org to get a list of whats in food ingredients :)

Thank you so much everyone!

Yes I am fairly unfortunate. I make minimum wage, my mom doesn't have a job, and my dad might get bought out of his company which he co-owns (very long story but my dad IS in the right) in less than a week. my parent's can't afford hardly anything, and my dad, no matter what he says differently, thinks it's just a phase because he did the same thing (went veggie) after he felt bad about going hunting and killing a deer. we fought so bad over it last night. Then do you know what he said?

"all vegetarians almost are lazy lesbian/gay bums that don't even have gardens [just because we do </sidenote>] but sit on their asses all day and claim to be better than meat eaters even though it's impossible to be full vegan".

O_O I found that EXTREMELY offensive because I know/have met a lot of veg*ns and all of them are some of the nicest people around. Do all omnis raise cows and then eat them? NO! So why should we be judged if we eat a lot of veggies but don't grow them, which some of us do anyway?! I hate my dad sometimes. And just because he has met a lot of veggies that DO have that attitude he shouldn't judge all of them by that. I told him that and he just said "I know by experience so I can and I will!". *stabs evil father*

But back to the food thing, It's almost a necessity. We are like dirt poor right now especailly.

Thanks!

just take a deep breath and let it go when he says that kind of things to you, please don't hate him because he's probably really stressed out for the reasons you mentioned above (the money thing)
so yeah, just let it go and don't try to argue at least until this whole thing settles
.... it would be better to prove him wrong anyway :)

good luck with everything, i was so tempted to buy onion rings from BK today

Since you are eating there b/c it's a) free and b) you're poor, stick with the healthiest choices, ok?

Add extra lettuce and tomatoes to your burger, have a baked potato and have a salad.

hershey sundae pie should be ok.

It's been ages since I've had one of those. At least 5 years. Dare I indulge?

Yo, don't listen to these fools. I love fast food, and kudos to Burger King for introducing a Veggie Burger option.

The fries and onion rings are in fact vegan... I know because I consume them with enough frequency. :)

The only thing on your list to be weary of is the caesar salad: Caesar dressing typically contains anchovies.

vegan onion rings? oh no.

Would they let you store a box of Boca burger or Boca Chic'n patties in their freezer? Then you could still benefit from the rest of the free meal (buns, fries, drinks and condiments) and just add your own fake meat for variety. Even though you would still have to buy your own "meat", A box of Boca patties are around $3 bucks here, with 6 to a box (I think), so that would still be pretty darn cheap, and give you some variety!

Isn't the BK veg burger a Boca burger? It's all the same over processed crap in the end.

Isn't the BK veg burger a Boca burger? It's all the same over processed crap in the end.

The BK burger is a garden veggy version, that, for some reason, a certain ingredient in it makes me want to gag.

That being said: "All the same over processed crap" is still more environmently friendly, healthier, and cruelty free compared to the meaty choices. I think it is truely wrong and not going to do anyone any good(especially those new to vegetarianism) to make comments like that. :brood: If it hadn't been for Boca burgers, I doubt I could have made the transition in the beginning. So discouraging people from trying products that may help them to make the transition could just lead someone to say F*** it, and go grab that greasy cow-burger.

scuse me...I'm irked:furious:

Some people can debate the environment and healthier parts of your statement - see Mollygoat's posts on processed soy products.

As the poster can eat the veggie burger, it wouldn't make sense for her to BUY another brand to bring to work, when one is provided free of charge there. If she's going to buy something to bring to work, it would be best to bring something not offered at work - milk, beans, rice, a sandwich, etc.

I did *not* need to know the BK onion rings were vegan. I knew the fries were but I always thought the onion rings had whey.

The BK Veggie Burger is vegetarian, not vegan, but if I needed a free meal that badly I wouldn't worry about trace ingredients. (Not sure if you're vegetarian or vegan.) While it is overly processed and not that great health-wise, no one will convince me it's as bad for you as typical fast food meat burger. Just try to eat free salad with it most days and not fries and onion rings every day. I don't know what types of salad dressings BK has, but go for the vinegar and oil type if they have it rather than fat-filled, creamy dressing.

<<<<<<< Used to eat Taco Bell bean burritos minus cheese several times a week when short on cash and lived to tell about it.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr:furious: I know for sure the ingredients in the BK veggie burger used to be vegan.. at least thats what they listed. THey must have changed the burger.. good news at least it is still vegetarian :) - remember "veggie" doesnt mean vegetarian

Here is what I got off the burger king website
http://www.bk.com/Food/Nutrition/ingredients.aspx :

BK VEGGIE® BURGER

Water, Vegetables (Mushrooms, Water Chestnuts, Onions, Carrots, Green Bell Peppers, Red Bell Peppers, Black Olives), Textured Vegetable Protein (Soy Protein Concentrate, Wheat Gluten, Water for Hydration), Egg Whites, Cooked Brown Rice (Water, Brown Rice), Rolled Oats, Corn Oil, Calcium Caseinate, Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Salt, Wheat), Onion Powder, Corn Starch, Salt, Hydrolyzed Corn, Soy, and Wheat Protein, Yeast Extract, Natural Flavors from non-meat sources, Sugar, Soy Protein Isolate, Spices, Garlic Powder, Dextrose, Jalapeño Pepper Powder, Celery Extract. Contains: Soy, Wheat, Milk and Egg. This is NOT a vegan product.

Here is a bit more about the sauces and a few other items.. according to the website:

NOT vegan /vegetarian at all:
ONION (FIRE-GRILLED) (has beef stock and fat - ew), CREAMY GARLIC CAESAR SALAD DRESSING,SAUCE-STEAK

VEGAN:
BARBECUE DIPPING SAUCE, HONEY FLAVORED DIPPING SAUCE, SWEET & SOUR DIPPING SAUCE, SWEET ONION VINAIGRETTE SALAD DRESSING, TOMATO BALSAMIC VINAIGRETTE SALAD DRESSING, FAT-FREE HONEY MUSTARD SALAD DRESSING, and all the burger buns

VEGETARIAN:
HONEY MUSTARD DIPPING SAUCE, ZESTY ONION RING DIPPING SAUCE, GARDEN RANCH SALAD DRESSING, SAUCE-TARTAR, SAUCE-SPICY, MAYO

In QUestion (lists that the "natural flavors" are animal sources but that could mean dairy or eggs.. wish they would clarify): BREAKFAST SYRUP, RANCH DIPPING SAUCE

So if you are vegan and want the french toast you can eat it dry (its already really sweet),, or try honey dipping sauce or jam

Im going to call them to ask them to carry a vegan burger again (my vegan son is gonna be irritated he cant have one once in a while).. they say they can not be reached by email.

It never was vegan in Canada.
