I haven't had this myself, I was wondering what you think about it if you have.

I tried it once or twice, and wasn't impressed... but when I managed the cheese
department at the local co-op, it sold very well, so there are people that love it.

Melts pretty well?

I didn't try melting it -- I just opened up a package so several people could taste it. That was when I was cheese manager. I have heard that it melts well though.

Granted my tastes have changed a lot since then, and I might like it now. But if I remember right, it contains casein, so I wouldn't be eating it anyhow...

Hopefully you will find someone here who has used it and is more informative than me! :)

It melts very well. It melts almost like real cheese.

Well, that does sound good, I need something that will melt on a reuben. Thanks guys, much appriciated. Hmmm, I was under the impression that it's vegan, though.

OK, this appears to be the lowdown on some of that styles being vegan:

Vegi-Kaas (vegan) in Mozzarella, Cheddar, regular spread, and smoked spread flavors. These products are 100% dairy free and made with a rice and oat beverage (no soy). They contain no genetically modified ingredients and are kosher parve.

There is a vegan version, but it tastes like crap, and doesn't melt. Did I mention that it tastes like crap?

Hmmm, that doesn't sound nearly as promising.

Well, tastes vary. You may end up liking it. Give it a shot. You may end up being pleasantly surprised.

I didn't know about the Vegi-Kaas! I'd give it a try. Smoked spread sounds good. :lick:

I don't care what everyone else says, this stuff is amazing.
And although I'm vegan, I don't have a problem with it containing casein. I suppose that doesn't make me a true hardcore vegan, but for things like that, the products will be made the same way whether or not I buy them, and abstaining from the use of a milk derivative isn't going to change their recipe. It's also not going to do a damn thing to the dairy industry, because they produce the same amount of casein regardless of how much they sell to almost-vegan cheese companies. I'm just thankful I found a soy cheese that isn't completely disgusting. It does lack a bit of flavor, but adding just a little salt makes it better.

I've never seen it before - where can I get it?

I have some good experience with FYH vegan gourmet and Cheezly.
