I'm into my 5th week of pregnancy, my first time. As soon as I found out, I researched the topic extensively, particularly on prenatal nutrition, and thought I could handle the optimal diet. Then I came down with a bad cold for a week. I'm now recovering and almost over it.
But, my appetite is sooo weird! Nothing sounds good to eat, but I know it's so important to nourish myself and my baby. I'm not exactly experiencing morning sickness or throwing up, but either I'm totally not hungry, or I'm ravenous (but only for certain foods).
So far, I seem to crave white bread. Now, I haven't eaten white bread for a long time, I've tried to eat whole grain breads and pastas. I am craving comfort foods from my childhood - Mac-n-cheese, white bread, spaghetti... None of the healthy foods I've been eating lately.
I am able to eat lots of fresh fruit, salads, and Natural Oven bagels, and... white bread. I want to crave vegetables, legumes, and whole grains again. Especially beans, as since I turned vegan, I've been eating bean burritos alot. I am managing to take my flax seeds in some form, as I think that's important for a baby's brain (I want him/her to be smart!). I take my prenatal pill to get the essentials, but I had hoped I would go through pregnancy with an optimal diet. Man, I can't wait to bring my child up on health foods, so when she feels sick and wants "comfort foods" she'll be thinking veggies and whole grains. :)
Will I get over this and be able to eat healthy again soon? Is this because of my cold I had last week, or being pregnant, or both?
