I just don't understand how people can be against ill treating animals in one way. But, have no problem with it in another. To me, it's a whole package, all or nothing. I oppose animals being killed, full stop. To me there is no difference between killing an animal for meat, fur, sport, 'science' etc.. I feel that it's all wrong.

Omega, you're certainly not alone in your views 'round these parts (that's Southeastern American for "on this board" :D )
No doubt you'll find plenty of friends here. Hang around ;)
Hello Bankruptor. I'm sure that I'll be 'round these parts for a fair ol' while. I even got my 'significant other' to join at the same time I did. Her name's Wahya. She's from your side of 'The Pond'. :D

I agree completely with what you said, Omega. But I have more of an issue with hunters then with meat-eaters who don’t hunt. The cattle are taken care of (well, to an extent) unlike sport hunting, where the hunter will just take what he/she wants and then leave the animals to there own ends, and then complain when there is a problem.

For me it's about getting less suffering. It would be great if no animals were ever killed, blah blah blah, but until everyone goes vegeterian, I'd rather see the meat-eaters hunting than buying meat from a store. Many people who currently eat meat, would not eat meat if they had to hunt because it brings they're put face to face with the killing. But no, since they don't see the killing, or the inhumane treatment of animals on factory farms, they have no problem with it. Out of sight, out of mind. People like my mother who say "oh I could never kill a deer" but then go out and buy a pound of ground chuck. Is it better to pay someone else to kill for you? It might help your conscience, but it certainly doesn't help the animals, since the ones you're paying to do the killing mistreat and abuse the animals they're in charge of.

I wrote a (very) short story (primarily) about hunting.

Please be aware that some will most likely find it offensive.

That was a REALLY great story!
Hunting sucks... In my careers test i got told that i should be a hunter! Ha me of all people.. i cant even stand blood.
But it was merely because i put i like animals and then in another section i put i like weapons...
other things i got were "pig farmer"and "dairy farmer"
I dont really get it... i put i liked animals so why would i want to hurt them?
*DaNNy!*

Its a sick sad world out there.
(does this mean we are the light? I've never been holy before :D)
i hate game farms. i see them all the time on my work. one of the most saddest things i seen recently would be a deer farm. no way in hell are those things supposed to be enclised with wire. nor any animal , not like that.

Yes, and as a defense to the blood sport they enjoy so much, hunters use the over-population line.
You know, I really would hate to see those animals caged up like that. Such a noble animal in a cage of cold wire and metal.
I think I have just the computer games for you guys.

I agree with Omega.
I know we all have various opinions, but in my mind killing is killing. Hunting for any reason is still killing, as is calling it "sport", "population control" or "a family picnic". I'd very very surprised if any people here were vegan but thought hunting was somehow acceptable, humane or okay, because this totally goes against the whole 'equality and respect for all animals' lifestyle.
Just my humble opinion... :)

I agree completely with kpickell's posts. Obviously, I don't want any animals to be murdered, for food or for sport. However, the "out of sight out of mind" factor of meat eating that permeates the Western world, where everyone can buy prepackaged meat that essentially "dehumanizes" the animals is a big part of the problem. If people couldn't eat meat unless they killed the animals themselves, I think we'd see a lot more vegetarians, because while most people don't mind eating the product if they don't have to think about its origins, by and large the average person is going to have a problem with doing the dirty work themselves.

I agree with VeggieTash and Omega. Killing for any reason is wrong, and evil.
Whenever I run into someone who likes to hunt, (and there are a LOT of them here in Nebraska) I tell them the only way hunting could ever be considered a "sport" is if they strip naked and do it. If they can bring down a deer or pheasant hunting naked, then they can call it sport, and they'll have earned the kill (jeez, I hate even using that word)...

I, too, agree with Veggitash and Omega. And I think the forms of animal oppression that are clearly trivial, like fox hunting and sport hunting, are in some twisted way "better" than for example animal experimentation, since they at least aren't disguised with the "moral" issues of being necessary for humans etc. - in other words, they (supporters of fox and sport hunting) just plainly admit (at least in the case of fox hunting) that it really is about the willingness to torture sentient beings because it's fun.
