A lot of vegetarian starter kits are free. You just have to know where to look and it's pretty easy to find one. I have tons lying around my house that I haven't looked at since I went vegetarian.
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has a pretty good starter kit that comes with a DVD called Chew on This, and it has reasons to go veg, footage of slaughter houses and farm factories, and some of their commericials. Check their website for the kit (I think it takes you to another website called GoVeg.com).
PETA's website: www.peta.org
You can find a really detailed starter kit at this link: http://www.tryveg.com/cfi/toc/ It's from an AR group called Compassion Over Killing (COK) and it's totally free. Like I said, a lot are free.
VeganOutreach.com has a GREAT starter kit!
Try Google or MSN or YAHOO! for a detailed search.
Good luck!
