Maybe it was just me, but I really was under the impression that veal farming was banned around 1992 in the UK.
I spotted an odd farm the other day and went to have a sneaky peak, only to find those veal 'igloos' with little baby calves inside.
I took some photos and got them passed onto a group, as I wasn't sure how legal these things were, and was shocked to find that actually calves can legally be raised for veal here. Only the tiny wooden veal crates are banned.
Sickening. Just thought you might want to know

Yeah, only the veal crates were banned in the UK 1992. The crates will be banned in EU by 2006 as well.
But non-crate veal farming is alive and well all over the UK and EU.

Yeesh, I just never expected it. :-/
Even though those crates are banned, which are definitely worse than the modern methods, the calves are still confined to a small space, and all they can do is moo to their mummies across the road... they'll never be able to nuzzle up to them for comfort, food, warmth, contact.... all they have is mesh and plastic, and a little bit of hay. What sicko thinks of these things?!!

are those igloos for veal? i recently visited pennsylvania, and we went past a dairy farm while on a tour, and there were so many calves in those igloos. the tour guide just said those are the baby cows.
The small igloo pens are typically used to house baby female calves after they are taken from their mothers on a factory dairy operation. When they grow up, they will become milk producers. Male calves intended for veal production are usually shipped elsewhere, to farms specializing in veal production.
Dude, I can't feel my face! :lick:

If you contact the RSPCA they should be able to provide details about this.
I could find little/next to nothing about any bans or anything covering VEals (expect since 2000 the UK was able to export them) from the DEFRA.gov.uk website (always good to check in farm related queries)
I did find however the forms you need to send if you want to send the animals for slaughter :(
