June 13, 2005 -- People who drink diet soft drinks don't lose weight. In fact, they gain weight, a new study shows.

http://my.webmd.com/content/Article/107/108476.htm?z=1728_00000_1000_tn_02

I stopped drinking diet soda because of the aspartame, but it's a good thing I did. Now, I only have regular soda once in awhile as a treat. But, overall, I'm trying to cut out refined sugars from my diet.

Yeah I only drink pop if it's the only thing available and I'm really, really thirsty. That situation rarely arises though.

It's also terrible for your teeth.

Pop is a nutritionally bankrupt waste of stomach space.

Yah, I used to drink a can of diet Dr. Pepper every day with my lunch. I finally quit drinking sodas completely weeks ago. I remember when people saw me drink diet soda, they'd say "Harrumph! You don't need diet! You're skinny enough as it is!" (I just didn't like the taste of regular sodas). However, I'm glad I quit sodas completely. Even if there are other factors at work in the risk of becoming overweight, at least I've eliminated one possible factor.

Now if I could only get into a regular exercise routine...

"Fowler is quick to note that a study of this kind does not prove that diet soda causes obesity"
-----------------------

I was looking for a statement in that article just like this.

I doubt the actual soda is the cause of obesity but I figure most people who drink a lot of pop and diet pop probably have a certain type of diet that is high is premade /high fat food and fast-food. That's just my guess but I kindof think that's most likely true.

Oh aspertame is horrible. It has become incredibly hard to find gum with real sugar in it instead of these horrible chemical inventions.

I started drinking diet soda when I started Weight Watchers and my diet was pretty much lowfat with the only fast food being salad and baked potatoes from Wendy's as well as Subway sandwiches.

I think the cause is that aspartame does not signal the body that it's had enough, so the body continues to crave and eat more. This is especially true of sugary foods.

I recently quit (about 3 weeks ago) because of the aspartame. I have not noticed a reduction in weight. However, I have noticed a reduction in headaches.

Thats an interesting read, but the title seems misleading ... although it serves the purpose of drawing attention :p

Its really not saying the diet soda directly causes weight gain, its saying that ...

1) People attempt to wrong their dietary woes by having diet soda instead of regular. ie- I can have that extra large buttered popcorn if I cut out a few calories of soda.

2) The sweeteners effect your body in a similar way to sugar making it crave more food.

Either way, maybe I can convince myself to get off the stuff once and for all ... doubtful, but I should try ;)

You mean like "I'll have a big mac, large fries...super sized and a diet coke"?

Speaking of headaches, I got one at my grandma's house this weekend and I asked for some medicine. She gave me Diet Mt. Dew and, with a great deal of shock to me, my headache went away. I had a caffeine headache and I never heard of that until the weekend. Hmm. The things you learn at grandma's house....

But this was coming from the woman who told me that bologna was vegan.

I work in a movie theatre, and I hear that excuse every single day. So they get our Large and Large Refillable Combo and get Extra Extra Butter and a Diet Pepsi. Good job, people.

I don't believe diet soda is anymore a factor than chewing sugar-free gum. It's probably more of a clue about the type of lifestyle one leads, really. Besides, when I wasn't eating a thing I was drinking around 4 cans diet soda per day and I was the reverse of obese.

I drink Decaf Diet Coke, and need to cut them out of my diet. Since I cut out meat almost 3 weeks ago, I'm going to have to ease into the soda thing. My mother cut diet sodas (and coffee) out of her diet, and she said she feels much better.

Regular soft drink and fruit juices both give me a terrible headache because of the sugar content, so diet soft drink is it for me. I prefer to drink water most of the time, but with meals I like to have something with flavour.

From what I've read, aspartame isn't the big evil everyone claims it is.

I'm not an expert but it seems there is an aweful lot of bad stuff said about it. Of course just because there is a lot of bad stuff said about it doesn't prove anything. I suppose one would have to look at the source of the information too. But a simple google search shows mostly bad results for anyone wanting to peruse them;

I had a friend who switched to Diet Coke and, changing nothing else in his life (seriously), lost 15 lbs. He was drinking a LOT of Coke, though!!!

I personally hate the taste of regular sodas; I much prefer diet drinks. However, yes, I'm trying to cut them from my diet. Mostly for my teeth (acid), but also because I'd like to eat only food that I understand. I "get" corn syrup (bad for you, but I understand where it comes from), but not aspertame.

Most of the bad stuff I have read are either anecdotes or insane paranoid rants.

If you go here: http://www.snopes.com/toxins/aspartame.asp there are a list of links to websites that quote actual scientific research into the effects of aspartame. None have found any harmful effects from consuming it.

I can't help wondering if most of the symptoms people experience from drinking diet coke are actually from excessive caffeine consumption.

I eat a relatively healthy diet. But, diet soda is my weakness. I don't drink it because it is diet and has no calories. I actually like the taste. But, I am sooo addicted. Just when I think I have it kicked Diet Pepsi starts calling my name again...ugh... I know, pathetic.

I just read a book that stated that aspartame is unstable at tempertaures above 85 degrees and eventually breaks up into formaldehyde and other component parts.

Well I gave it up. Not due to this article per se, but due to a lot of reasons. And man, am I in a bad way. Ugh.

But I don't seem to have any appetite. The nausea peaked yesterday, but today, I just don't feel like eating at all. Maybe the study stuff might have some truth to it.

It seems to me that it's not so much that the soda causes it as that it causes a craving, as the article said. A true study would be to have two groups with identical diets calorically, and feed one diet sodas and one water, and determine the results based upon that. It's not viable to point the finger at soda as the culprit without proof that the soda itself directly causes the weight gain.

To say it stimulates appetite is the same as saying that fragrant food causes one to eat more because of greater enjoyment. Correlation is not causation.

Does anyone drink Splenda? That is the only fake sweetner I like.
