I'm a Lacto Vegetarian-going-on-Vegan and for anyone new to vegetarianism, I'd be happy to give support. Please feel free to PM me.
Thanks for switching to veganism/vegetarianism!

Same here. If anyone needs some advice, I'm more than happy to help. I'm vegan, have been so for a year, but I'm accepting and congratulate people who've embraced all levels of vegetarianism.
Good thread.

Both of you can help me. I'm interested in becoming a vegan but I'm unsure of what this entails and how to start. Please give me some good advice too on whether I should wait until I'm older-right now I'm only in my teen years and still living at home. Will becoming a vegan affect my growth? Please help. Thanks!

I'm a teen, too. :D
I'm Lacto now and I refuse milk and cheese slices, but I'm going Vegan very soon. My advice would be to do whatever YOU want to do. I went Lacto cold turkey, no second thoughts, just gave up meat. I don't know about you--maybe you have to take it slow or maybe you can go cold turkey, too; it's all about what you feel comfortable doing.
If you do everything correct, no, it won't affect growth or anything.
Make sure to eat properly, that is you need a balanced diet. You have to supplement your iron, calcium & protein (they tend to be the biggies).

I am currently not taking anything either, and I know I need too.
So I should be taking a calcium & iron supplement?
I also give my son a liquid vitamin, but his iron was .1 too low today at his appointment. Any ideas for him? He is 2.
Thanks for the help!
I currently take vitamin B-12 supplements.

Just to tell you, I went cold turkey to being a lacto-ovo vegetarian and I guess my next step is giving up eggs. A few of my friends told me that being a vegan would make me lose a lot of weight and i'm already skinny! Do you have any ideas for how I should tell my parents because they still haven't really accepted me being a regular vegetarian?

Well, vegetarianteen.com has a good section on talking and dealing with parents. Check the sidebar on the left. I would suggest telling your most linent parent (i.e. tell your mom if she's more flexable because then she could help your dad, or vice versa) first. I told my mom. Maybe you'll have to tell your dad because he'd be easier to deal with. I don't know--but, please, check out vegetarianteen.com

I'm the same as you, lol--I don't take any supplements either, and I'm proud to say, that I just went vegan!!!! :D
I would say, for your son, to feed him maybe a tad more food that are rich in iron. I don't know what else to say---I'm not a nuritionist :D

What kind of vegetarian? I just gave up dairy, which would make me a vegan. Yay, happy me! I guess you should talk with a trained professional (I would feel bad if anyone got sick). :D

I just wanted to post a public THANK YOU to Elizabeth Cade for her support and kind words in her pm to me last month.
I've been away from the site for a few weeks, but decided yesterday to just cut out the poultry I was keepin in my diet out of fear. Today, coming on the site and reading ElizabethCade's message really strengthened my resolve. Her positive and helpful message was just what I needed.
I don't need or want meat..so why eat it just because I think I 'should'?
THANK YOU!

Is it bad form for your first post to be a month old bump?
Regardless, I am forging ahead with this post and this new low on the food chain direction.
I may be rushing into this so I wondered if the PM help is still available. The only true vegtarian I know no longer works in the same company as I and may not have time to answer every email right away.
A big thanks for all your support to every contributor. I have learned a great deal from reading the established threads and you should get the warm and fuzzies from knowing that.
Take care, see you around.
