I bought vegetarian cheese last week... I'm absolutely loving it!!!! lol. :D
I do hope I can make the transition from vegetarian cheese to vegan cheese though... :(
I think it might take me a while to keep myself away from dairy. :(
I think I'm doing reasonably good so far... I don't have gelatine and now animal rennet as well... :)
As a newbie, let me personally thank you for taking the time to start this thread....very very helpful.
Thanks
Dvin

I'm new here. I gave up red meat and pork years ago but recently gave up chicken after reading the book "Skinny Bitch" and seeing videos online. I will never eat meat again nor do I want to contribute money to farm and dairy factories.
Thank you for creating this site. I already see there is lots of support and advice here,

Hi gabby! Welcome to VB! :bobo: The first thing that comes to mind for protein is beans. Hummus and chips/veggies is a good snack. I believe nuts and seeds are also good snacky sources. There's been lots of threads on this so just do a search and you'll come up with lots of ideas.

Michael, I think it is a wonderful idea to have a NEW VEGETARIAN thread. I had already decided I didn't want to eat any flesh again, before I actually found any forums on being veg*n. I have to say, that if I'd found the forums when I first became curious about it, I'd have a read a few posts and decided they were all militant cultists and gave up on the idea. Thank God I made my decision first. I only pray that someday these people who think like my mom (basically, "think like _I_ think NOW, or else there'll be WW3), if only they could see that the people they run off are lost chances, and stop attacking them. If only they could see that not everyone starts in the same place and some people do things faster than others, and be willing to respect other humans, as much as animals, there would be more people still on the path.

Hi everyone! I've only been a veggie for a year or less. I only discovered veggie cheese recently. Before I had no idea about renet. Joining earlier would have made me think more quickly. Good idea.

Hi guys, I've been Vegan for only 10 days and yesterday I went to a sports bar with some friends. Of course I was ready to not eat anything and I was really happy to find a Veggie burger on their menu so I order it. It was very oily but I was happy to find and option instead of staying hungry. One of my friends tried it too and she said it had cheese in it! I said No way! It said Veggie Burger. The waitress had no idea since it seams like they buy them.
Any how, do you guys know if you can trust a "Veggie Burger" in most restaurants? Is that Vegan or just Vegetarian with cheese? Any tips on this one?

You'd have to ask if they make it themselves, or what brand it is - you could potentially ask to see the nutritional info from the box if it's storebought. Some brands are vegan, but many use egg. Finding vegetarian stuff isn't so bad, but finding vegan stuff is. If you want to get really specific, you'd also have to ask about the bread, as that may well have egg or milk in it.
And congrats on 10 days :)

Does anyone have any links to any make-at-home meat replacers and things like that? We don't have much of a variety (I live in Norway, the worlds fish and cow nation) so unless you're a soytarian (:p) cos we have soymilk and one place has the yoghurts - there's not much to eat around here.
I get so jealous of all the Americans on here saying how they just popped down to the supermarket and got fake bacon, fake cold meats, tofu (1000 of different marinated ones as well as the typical firm or silken), teppan, seitan, fake chicken, fake fish, tuno, fake EVERYTHING *goes a bit crazy*
We don't even have veggie labeling  I bought a bar of milkless chocolate and found, for the first time in my life I saw the vegan label first hand.
So... help

Unfortunately, Marco, finding vegan products is more difficult than finding vegetarian ones. As rockindancer86 said, they may have eggs or dairy in the burger or the bun. Also, most places use the same grill to cook veggie burgers as they use to cook beef ones. (I've been keeping my eyes peeled for 3 years and I've found one fast-food restaurant that cleans the grill for you before cooking your burger.)
Good things to avoid: Things that require contact to cook, like on a grill, or things that are deep fried - my mom works in a KFC and she says they add chicken fat to the deep-fryer oil to give the chips more flavour. Result: even though chips in canola oil would technically be vegan, they're usually not. Even if they don't add the fat on purpose, it leaks out into the oil when they deep fry any meat.
Also, avoid processed foods when eating out. At home, you can check the label for the ingredients. When you're out, the more processed it is the more likely it is that they added dairy or eggs. :(
I useful trick I picked up: I got tired of being told food was vegan, only to find it wasn't after all. So when I went to a restaurant or bar to eat, I told the server I was allergic to eggs and seafood, very lactose intolerant and that I could not eat white or red meat. That covered pretty much all the bases. For some reason, that got me much better service than saying I was a vegan... they're so much nicer when they think you don't have a choice in the matter! It even prompted one server to ask the chef, then come back out with a clipping from the box with a list of ingredients. You can be sure, I tipped her like 50%!
In short, always be prepared for the idea that there might simply not be anything on the menu you can eat. You can always go to another bar or restaurant. Maybe if enough people left because of a lack of variation in the menu, they'd actually step up and provide some alternatives.
Out of curiosity, whereabouts do you live? If you're in/near Montreal I can give you the names of some great restaurants!
SORRY for the long entry, if you read it all then you deserve a pat on the back! :D

A veggie burger doesn't mean made-of-just-veggies. There has to be something there to bind the veggies together, and quite often it's eggs or cheese. On the other hand it could be breadcrumbs. You just have to ask, you can't tell from the menu unless you're in a specialist vegetarian restaurant.
