I'm experimenting with growing yams, Dioscorea batatas. This is the real yam, not sweet potatoes, Ipomoea batatas, which are called yams in the US. I got my little yam tuberlets from JL Hudson http://www.jlhudsonseeds.net/, $4.00 for 1 oz, many dozens of tiny tubers. I put them in individual pots; now they are sprouting, and when they have good root systems I'll plant them out in my garden. I'm very excited about this crop, which is supposed to be easier to grow than potatoes, and more nutritious. It is also a perennial. Here's more info about the lovely Yam:
