I really need some advice.

I am 26 and have very, very mild acne. I went to one dermatologist and she prescribed a cream and antibiotics. I didn't like the idea of antibiotics for a few reasons.
1. I've read that it is not effective for acne because you develop resistance.
2. Antibiotic resistance. I have had a lot of infections as a kid, so I really don't like the idea of taking more.

So I sought a second opinion and he too gave me a gel, which works much better and one month of antibiotics. I took the antibiotics, but then he prescribed 2 months more.

I really don't want to be taking antibiotics for 3 full months!!!

Would it be a wise decision to just use the gel? From what it says on the website (www.differin.com) the gel looks like it works pretty good on it's own. As of now my face is totally clear.

Which antibotic did you get? At the longest stretch, I think I took antibotics for 6 months straight for my acne, plus was using a topical antibotic. (Currently, I just use a sulfur compound.)

It's up to you in the end, but it may have been best to discuss the reasonings for the extended antibotics with the doctor instead of asking us :)

I can't really read his writing,

Minoazline 100G

It's annoying to take because you can not eat 3 hours before or after taking it. (So I am STARVING) and then my bc is considered useless, so that's been fun too.

I pretty much hate the stuff. Plus I am really afraid to take antibiotitcs for that long.

3 months isn't that long for skin antibotics.

It comes down to how badly do you want to keep your skin clear :)

I was on antibiotics for awhile then wanted to go off, for similar reasons as yours...and not only do you develop a resistance to them over time, but they can actually be bad for you - specifically, can harm your liver.

Anyway, for the past year my dermotologist has just prescribed me topical treatments. A face wach in the morning (called Triaz), a moisturizer also in the morning (Clindamycin, I think it's called) and the same gel as you at night (Differin). It's helped a lot, so I recommend this regime over the pills.

BTW, I'm 24 and female and my skin wasn't THAT atrocious before, just needed a little help.

And I'd recommend a dermatologist over your regular physician, if you can do that.

Is it minocycline? I have taken them all. I wouldn't advise taking internal antibiotics indefinitely. They tend to do more damage than good. The way my dermatologist explained it, you should only do that if you have acne that does not respond to topical treatments.

It seems odd to me that they'd prescribe an antibiotic for a case of "very, very mild acne." I'd definitely try just the gel.
