View Full Version : Banning Kitchen Knives? What a joke.

Doctors' kitchen knives ban call (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4581871.stm)

The researchers said there was no reason for long pointed knives to be publicly available at all.

They consulted 10 top chefs from around the UK, and found such knives have little practical value in the kitchen.

None of the chefs felt such knives were essential, since the point of a short blade was just as useful when a sharp end was needed.

Trying to picture slicing watermelon or cutting open a large gourd with a paring knife ... :dizzy:

If knives are outlawed, only outlaws will have knives. Oh... :p

I'm still trying to figure that out. So what's next? Forks? Kabob skewers? Or nooooo ... not my grapefruit spoon?!?!?!?!

This reminds me of something I was thinking about on Saturday. I had just got my chef's knife kit and I was carrying it home, when I wondered if I could get arrested for carrying a concealed weapon.

Wierd......but I'd like to point out....Santuko knives don't have a point, and are multipurpose...they can cut through just about anything, including gourds and watermelon, just fine! Most chef's I watch on TV use them.

I'd also like to know what is considered "long"?

Sounds just stupid to me.

We should also ban cars because they can be used to run someone over. We should ban all household cleaners, pesticides, fertilizers, over the counter and prescription meds because they could be used to poison someone. And we should ban the human hand and foot because they can be used to kill someone.

In fact ... since it takes a human being to weild any of these instruments in order to kill another living being we should simply ban humans all together.

Nearly anything hard and heavy can be used impulsively to inflict damage. While we're at it, lets ban hammers and crowbars! Lamps over a certain weight! Heavy and/or sharp pieces of sculpture! Anything that could possibly be used to harm others!

This is ridiculous :P

Actually, since this is from the BBC, trying to picture cricket played with itty-bitty little bats...

Yep, this is weird.

But I never use my long knives that are pointed. Too dangerous for the klutz that is me. I use my bread knife (with a rounded tip and a serrated edge) to do watermelons, canteloupes, etc.

"They argued many assaults are committed impulsively, prompted by alcohol and drugs, and a kitchen knife often makes an all too available weapon."

Um, sounds like the alcohol and drugs are the problem, not the kitchen knives.

The safest way to cook is using only plastic scissors (http://www.funshop.com/images/fs_6208_l.jpg) and no heat.

You can always just shoot the watermelon since apparently guns = ok, but cooking knives = bad

Hmm..guns are most definitely not okay in the UK.

Perhaps you could use a sledg-o-matic, Gallagher style. :D

I like having proper kitchen knives. Hell, we got some cool knives two months ago, and I use them all the time. We've got short ones, bread knives, big ones, and i use them all. What a joke! Adults should be able to buy knives, especially if they're for culinary purposes.

Why call for an immediate ban? Maybe we should try a 5-day waiting period first, and see how THAT works. No use being hasty.

:D
