View Full Version : How tight is too tight for ponytails?

My hair is long, thin, and extremely curly. When it's humid out and I'm running, I need to have my hair in a ponytail. The thing is, because my hair is so thin yet heavy (because of the length), I wear my ponytail holder really tight, like wrapped around three or four times maybe. I don't let lightheaded or anything, it's just a little bit of pressure, like when you buy a sweatband that's a little too small or something. But is this too tight? Like will it hurt my workout?

Why I need my hair up:

If it's pulling hair out or causing pain, it's too tight. Otherwise, you're probably ok. Of course, it can break the hairs if you keep it up a lot. I have to usually every day. Oh well.

Ugh, I've already accepted that I'll probably be bald by 30. :( I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to faint on my run today from loss of circulation (don't worry, it's not that tight :) ) They should invent some miracle scrunchie that won't rip out your hair but will hold it up, too.

I wear mine super-tight too Brownie. I can't stand that "sticky hair in your face" feeling..blech. So far..no brain damage. :) (be quiet Krista :D )

Why does everyone think I'm ready to pounce on them?

all i can say is that if your eyes are poppin' out and you have a constant weird smile on your face, they're probably too tight :D

Yours don't look too tight. But I have read recently that continued wearing of too tight ponytails can cause hair loss. So I've lightened up on mine and added a headband to keep the strays away.

Hi,
My thought is that you shouldn't have it so tight because of the damage it can cause for your hair. I just saw in a magazine Goodie is making an elastic specifically for athletes. I'd imagine you could purcase these at Walgreens or something. I also find those clear, plastic elastics work better.

Or you could buy some inexpensive pomade and put it in the hair before. This will give your hair a bit of texture and it will hold more. (Beauty pagent contestants never wash their hair the day of, because the dirt in the hair makes it easier to hold all those fancy styles.) The pomade would do the same thing.

Have you also considered a lower ponytail? Some bobbi pins could hold the fly aways.

Do you not have any layers in your hair? That might help you out, is some really long layers. Most curly hair looks better with a few layers so you don't get that dreaded triangle look. Plus it's easier to work with, and looks fresher and cleaner. Since it is curly it is going to be weaker than straight hair, so you really want to be careful about brushing harshly, wearing tight ponytails, and stuff like that.

Good luck!

You could also just gather up your hair as though you were going to make a ponytail, braid it, and either tie it off at the end or make a braid bun if you don't want bouncing and fasten it with a few pins. That's what I used to do when I had long hair.

You could also shave your head... :boobies:

personally, i dont like the band. when i make a pony-tail, i make it on the top of my head, and then slide it down, and move it fromside to side a little. that way, its not right on my scalp. i dont like it when it's on the scalp. but that'sjust me. you probably like different things then i.

when i had long hair, i liked my ponytails tight, but when i would go running, i would wear my hhair in a loose braid down my back.

now, i have meta-short hair, and when i go running, i just need to worry about makign sure my head is covered so i don't burn. XD

That doesn't look too tight.

I have shoulder length hair so I keep mine in a low ponytail and don't pull it all the way through. I also have bangs so I use little tiny clips to hold those in place. Yeah I look like a 13 yr old with them in but it's better than sweaty hair in the face! :D

Your folicle can actually be damaged/stress to the point that your hair will not to grow back in that place. This is what I've heard anyhow. Try not to wear it so tight.

yeah, if it's breaking your hair off, it's too tight. if it's ripping it out by the roots, it's too tight, also.

make sure you use the terry cloth ones. they're easier on your hair than the elastic ones, if you know what I mean.

gosh... I have the same-ish problem. I've always worn my hair in a very tight ponytail when running or dancing or working out. I can't stand having it in a loose ponytail because then it moves around and I get stray hairs (which is an even bigger problem in dance than it is in running- you're whipping your head around a lot and if the hair gets in your fce, you lose your spot, and that's bad.)

I've never had any problems with it, really. When it was really really long, I'd ear it in a single tight braid down my back because it wouldn' whip around in my face like a ponytail or two braids would and it didn't hinder me putting my head on the floor like a bun would. it seemed to work well. My hair is too short and kinda aweird style right no so a single braid isn't tight enough anymore, but it might wor for you.

maybe a french braid? I don't knowhow tofrench braid, but they seem pretty secure to me. lots of thegirls used to do french braids in dance.
