View Full Version : Cat drinking fountains
If anyone uses one, what kind is it? I found 2 different ones. One with a steady stream of water and one that sends the water over a plastic bubble and the cats lick the bubble. I was just wondering what your cats seem to like before I spend the money on one. Thanks.

My neighbors have the stream of water fountain and all four of their cats LOVE it. The teenage kitty especially loves to smack the water stream and spray the room so plan on some wet floors!

Wonder if my cats would go for this. I have to leave a faucet dripping for them as they absolutley refuse to drink standing water. I don't like the idea of the dripping faucet but I like the idea of health problems due to lack of water even less. I am just afraid to spend the bucks on something they may hate.
I got this (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=5864&Ntt=drinkwell&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&N=0&Nty=1) for my two cats several years ago. They were apprehensive at first, but by the end of the day they were lovin' it! Especially Sabrina, who was pestering me all the time to let her drink from the bathroom sink faucet. I bought the regular fountain with the 50 oz reservoir because that was all that was available at the time. When it inexplicably stopped working one day, I went back to putting out dishes of water for them, and they wouldn't touch it. They just don't like stale water. I adjusted the parts inside the fountain and got it working again, and good thing, too. My cats don't have kidney problems, but I still have peace of mind knowing they can get all the fresh water they need. It's one of the best cat related purchases I've ever made and I heartily endorse it. I say, spend the money. You'll be glad you did.

I found a cat drinking fountain at skymall.com.
I was reminded of it when I saw this thread.

My cat loves the streaming water kind. Ours broke, so I have to give him fresh water everytime he is thirsty.....that is about 10 times a day!! I need to buy a new fountain for him.

i forget what mine's called but it's like the stream one in that link except that the water runs down a little ramp instead of pouring out. it has a pump at the bottom with a screen to filter out the fur so it doesn't jam the pump. then it gets filtered and pours back out. there's just a little container that fits in the side that you take out and fill up, but once a month or so you have to take the whole thing apart and clean it. it's pretty easy to take apart and put together though so i don't mind. and because the water is constantly moving and filtered it doesn't get that dirty. we have a water softener so there tends to be a white residue that builds up around the side of the bowl (and on any dishes we let air dry, ew) so you probably won't have to clean it as often as i do if you don't have a softener.
anyway my cat loves it. he was a bit wierded out at first and just stared at it a lot. so i had left his old water bowl out for the first few days just in case he wasn't ready to try the fountain yet. he didn't know what to make of it, i had to actually put my finger in the water and touch it to his nose and then he started drinking from it right away now that he knew that's what it was for lol.
anyway i love it. his old water bowl had gone all brown and crusty on the bottom from hard water pre-softener) and just wouldn't come clean anymore, i didn't like him drinking out of it. i had seen the globe style fountain around but they're expensive, then just randomly spotted this one at walmart and it was pretty cheap. i think it was like $20 or so. the filters are about $5 for a pack of 2 i think. i think it's totally worth it. especially if means i don't have to fight the cat for room at the bathroom sink anymore.
oh yeah, and if you do get one just remember to check the screen for the pump now and then. i have to fish out the glob of fur that collects once a week or so or it totally covers up the screen and the water can't get in to the pump but it keeps pouring into the bowl from the reservoir and... overflow city. discovered that the hard way.

Mine is the same kind as LadyFaile's and my cat loves it. She especially likes to drink out of the top where the water comes out--it's really cute.

I'd get the free flowing fountain kind if I got one, but I suspect Munchie would be afraid of it cause he's kind of a wimp when it comes to that sort of thing. Atticus likes to sit on the counter in the bathroom sometimes and have the water turn on and play with it, though he doesn't really drink it as much as stick his feet in it and get little droplets of water all over the mirror.
Thanks for the feedback. I went ahead and ordered the Catit (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=11536&N=2002+2012) because my male kitty loves to drink the "sweat" off cold glasses and I figured that's the one he'd like best. He's disgusted my non-cat-appreciating friend a few times by going for her glass. :D He wins because he's the oldest and prone to UTIs, so I worry about his water intake more.
I might get the fountain one for the newest cat at a later date. She's 8 months old and loves running faucets. She's my sister's cat and only supposed to be staying until they find a place that will let them have her, but I got a feeling I will have her for life.

i got the dogit yesterday (exact same thing as the catit but it comes in a nicer colour :P) and my 3 cats (and my 1 dog) like it! they are also very picky when it comes to water, if it's more than a day old they won't touch it. so i am very happy, it seems like a good buy. also, i'm thrilled that it comes with a filter, because this means not having to use my brita which takes a while to filter water for their large water reservoir that they used to use.
I'm trying to find a place to put it where the dogs can't get to it. My cats don't like sharing with the dogs and I can't say that I blame them. My male kitty especially dislikes dog slobber and whatever else the dogs leave behind. He usually waits until I open the door to the little dog's room and then makes a dash for her water, because it's not so gross.
My dogs aren't picky at all when it comes to a source for water. They'll drink some pretty questionable stuff if I'd let them. So I'm not spending $ for a fountain for them! :p

I've got this one (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=1783&Ntt=fountain&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&N=0&Nty=1) without the extra reservoir. I keep it on a table (in a tray, since a couple of the cats like to splash) so the dog can't stink it up. As long as you take it apart and clean it regularly and replace the filter, it does just fine.
The cats drink from it in different ways. One of them always drinks from the stream, one drinks from the pooled water, and one drinks from the pooled water at the edge, usually spilling it over the side (:grr: ).

hmm, funny...my 3 cats don't mind 'dog slobber' at all; they readily drink water from the bowl after the dog has. and they like getting baths from him! haha.
