well, of all things to hit the news!

and the real reason this guy came forward had to do with money more than anything else:

Felt had expressed reservations in the past about revealing his identity, and about whether his actions were appropriate for an FBI man, his grandson said. His family members thought otherwise. His daughter, Joan, argued that he could "make enough money to pay some bills, like the debt I've run up for the children's education."

sad and pathetic in a way. it would have been much classier to take this to the grave rather than try to cash in, since it was done "for principle". felt had a priviledged and well paid position in the government. wasn't that enough to do the right thing?

Do you have a link or something that explains what you're talking about? I have no idea who this deep throat guy is.

Watergate whistleblower Deep Throat played a central role in one of the biggest White House scandals ever, helping bring down a president and inspire a political mystery so famous his nickname earned an entry in Webster's. Thirty years later, the source is secret no more.

At age 91, after decades of hiding his role as The Washington Post's tipster from politicians, the public and even his family, former FBI official W. Mark Felt told his secret to a lawyer his family had consulted on whether Felt should come forward.

Deep Throat was the source for Woodward & Bernstein, who worked for the Washington POst and broke the story about the nixon administration & the watergate/democratic nat'l party breakin.

Here's the article in Vanity Fair, where Felt officially released his identity.

If I had a nickname like that I'd remain an unknown.

You gotta love how the american educational system doesn't teach anything past WWII. WAY too many young people have no idea who deep throat was or how important this is to american history.

The man did alot for his country, and I think it's only appropriate that we get him a hooker (to perform a particular favor which will go unnamed; or will it?).

Or anything before the Civil War :(

actually, i don't recall learning anything AFTER the american civil war in school. but then again, my school district has always been particularly special.

i was lucky enough to take a class called "contemporary american history" which took us from WWII to the late 80s (i was in high school in the early 90s). It was a great class.

The problem i had with history class is that year after year (in american history) we would start with pilgrims and end with WWII. I must have gone through this course four or five times. It makes sense to me that high school american history should be a two year course with the first year being pilgrims to WWII and the second being WWII to present. I also think that there should be an international history survey class for one year. History really is important.

Besides this, i think it's interesting to know who this guy is. it's sad to hear that he was hard up for cash.

I had no idea who the hell this deep throat dude was  I knew a bit about the whole scandal from my mom and grandpa but school didn't teach me a damn thing past WWI (not that I did 4 years of HS anyway). I'm going to look into this now. It's quite interesting.

I didn't know because I'm Canadian. :P But I just read a couple of articles about him. Very interesting.

I have a feeling there are a lot of people who grew up after this all happened who don't know anything about Deep Throat, or Watergate, or even Nixon, other than he went to China.

I sat through Watergate hearings in school (they brought a TV into class so we could watch) and saw "All The President's Men" when it came out. I'm still surprised that this guy decided to come forward. And also a little disappointed. I remember reading Mad magazine's spoof of the movie ("Gall of the President's Men"), and liked their choice for Deep Throat: Gerald Ford!

heh. rev, if you saw his picture, i think he's way beyond the help of any hooker :). i think the poor guy was manipulated by a greedy family, and i hope they don't get a dime out of this.

They did back in the day when I was in high school. All The President's Men was one of my favorite books that we had to read that year.

I don't think his motives are what's most important here. The man is a a hero, and him coming out means that the media will have something substantial to focus on for a change.

We got up to Reagan-era in my US history class (in 1993-1994). We spent maybe two weeks on pre-civil-war related issues. And considering every history class I had before that stopped with the civil war, none of us had a problem with that.

Maybe my school is weird then :p In the standardized tests we take, the social studies section doesn't use anything pre-civil-war, so it's obviously not important to teach it
