View Full Version : Animal testing

How do I find out if the products in my house were tested on animals? Sometimes they don't post it on the packaging. Does anyone know how to find out? I'm new to the whole vegetarian/animal activist/environmentalist field and I don't know very much.

PETA has a list of companies that do and don't test.

Best to buy something that says "does not test on animals"

Many seem proud and put a little bunny on the bottle somewhere.

The bestest way to be sure is to ask the company (call or write) and cross reference that with that Peta/other veg organizations say. I myself am far too lazy to do this. My solution is to shop for toiletries at my health good store and look for the bunny logo or "not tested on animals", or whatever. I trust the hippies that run the store to be vigilant.

For those people living in Canada, I emailed Loblaws and they say that Loblaws does not test it's No Name or President's Choice household products on animals.
They didn't go into details about if they are committed to making products cruelty free. But I intend to do some more inquiring.

Meatless: No Problem!
I emailed their customer service department again asking some questions that PETA forwarded to me. I'll post the results when I get them.

here's the thing. use what you have (as not to waste it), and then replace it with something all natural.
i currently clean my house with salt, bon ami, vinegar, water, and eucalytus oil (such that you don't get a strong vinegar smell.

VeggieBeth, thanks for asking. I was wondering, too and was thinking about posting, but you beat me to it. :)
Thanks for the list. I have a paper AAVS list somewhere bit it seems to be MIA. Actually, I just don't feel like digging for it. I'm kinda bummed that some of my favorite products, Arm & Hammer (that claims to be all-natural, ha ha), and Suave test. A look into my bathroom looks like a live ad for Suave.
I like Softsoap too. I have two small bottles of the stuff and a large bottle. Lucky for me, and not them of course, I got the bottles for free, thanks to sale prices of $2, and $2 off coupons. He he. Suave used to be my favorite shampoo until I learned the truth. Blah on them. Most (if not all) of the Suave I have in the bathroom I got for free or over 50% off after sales and coupons at least. I wonder if Dove does....
Dove also bothers me. They used to be my favorite deoderant. Nope. Not any more. I don't even think I'm going to worry about going to Walgreens this week to get a stick for a buck. (It's on sale for $2; I have a $1 coupon from Sunday's paper.)
Blah. More "good news" on a bad day. (And it's only 8:04.)
Thanks for the info.

I thought the same thing when I saw which companies do/don't test and then realized I had many brands in my house. :( But, I now only buy cruelty free products and I'm MUCH happier about my choices and where my money goes. :) Good luck and let us know if there is anything else you need.

check out veganessentials online (can't post link... too new)
all of their products are vegan, non-sweatshop and not tested on animals i believe... it's expensive, but just check out the brands they list... they're also really speedy to answer questions!

I admit this (feel free to laugh):
After reading the list I was bummed because my two favorite soaps are owned by P&G--The Young and the Restless and Guiding Light. What's kinda sad is that I don't like missing GL. I'll tape it if I know I'll miss two or more days. (Yes, it's sad and funny.)
Anyway...
A few months ago (I don't know how long, though if I went to a soap board, I could find out; Im not bad enough to know when characters exit and enter by the exact date), one of the actors, Grant Alexander left. Recently, on a soap board, I learned that he was doing a PETA video. It wasn't until after I read this thread that I made the possible connection.
Kinda inane and off-topic, but I thought it was interesting.
