So, enjoys walking? Do you do it as excercise, a mental/ spiritual rest, or merely as a means of getting from point A to point B? Has anyone done any race-walking? I just walked for an hour around my neighborhood -- I love walking.

I love walking!! I prefer walking in the forest, wilderness, etc. rather than city street walking, because I find it more relaxing and energizing all at the same time. I'm very lucky where I live because we have river trails just two blocks from my house so it's a wondereful place for me to take my dogs to. I like that it's an activity that I can do with my dogs and that it's something they enjoy as much as me. Plus it's a healthy activity - what more could you want?? So ya, I guess you could say I do it for exercise, mental/spiritual rest, as a means to get around, and just for the heck of it to get out and about with my dogs each day! :D

I enjoy a good walk. It is very beneficial to me to take a long walk when I have things on my mind or problems I'm trying to work through. I have read about walking meditation, and sometimes I will employ that as I walk. Lately, I'm not satisfied with a mile or two of walking, and I end up walking for long periods of time. I am not sure how far I went last Wednesday, but I was gone for 2 hours, and walked enough that I was sore in my legs and feet the next day.
It's not as big of a workout as running is for me, but I am able to walk for a lot longer and farther than I can run, so I like to incorporate walking sometimes.

I'm starting to, for exercise, and as much as I hate to admit it it's somewhat enjoyable. :p I'm going to start off at about 2 1/2 miles per day, going to buy new shoes tomorrow.

All of the above, but before I didn't have a car I loved to walk because it clears the mind. But its annoying in the rain and cold :wall:

These days, I often go walking in the evening. Yesterday I went out around 10.50 pm. When I came home, around 11.40, we still had daylight. .

But while I'm very fond of these bright summer nights, I also love walking in the dark & cold of winter (and it does get dark very early in the afternoon).

Normally, I bring my CD-player, my lip balm, a spare CD loose in my pocket, my cellphone (often in my hood, because it's too big and lumpy to carry in a pocket), 1-2 paper tissues, my bus card, and money if I know I'll be going to or passing a store. Then I just walk -for an hour or more, usually, but these days it tends to be a little less.

What I consider my "long walk" is this big curve where I go to the island centre via one road, then take another one home. It's about 18 km long, and it takes me more or less 3 hours. I haven't been on this particulate walk since last fall, though.

I always walk on asphalted roads, I never really go into the woods or walk in any nature areas.

In short: I love walking. :)

That's a good idea to being that stuff along. Then you're open for options and protected too. Daylight after 10:00 pm!

I like to walk a lot. My husband and I walk my beagles everyday just about. And generally I've always liked to walk and hike too.

There seems to be debate whether you need more cardio or if brisk walking is just as good. I don't know. I do cardio a couple times a week and Pilates.

More people should walk.

Oh, yes, mental and spiritual exercise. I never quite thought of it, but walking is excellent for that, sort of clenses the mind.

My old house was situated somewhat in the middle of nowhere, but I recently moved to a neighborhood from which I can actually walk places. I love it. My friends all ask me why I haven't gotten my driver's license yet, but why should I? They say driving makes them feel 'independent,' but I feel much more independent when I can transport myself using my own feet. Walking is wonderful.

I've been walking for a couple of weeks as exercise. We have a paved trail that runs all through town, most of it is shaded by trees so even though it gets muggy you don't have the sun beating down on you.

I wasn't able to go for a few days earlier this week and I was surprised how much worse I felt (mainly mentally). So I guess it's exercise with the added benefit of giving me a sense of accomplishment.

And unlike bike riding it's really easy for me to get motivated to go. Plus I have an iPod to take with me now! :hamster:

I love walking. By myself, I only walk to get places. I feel strange to go walking on the busy city streets with no destination in mind. Sometimes I'll go walking with a friend or a date though. It's a nice, casual activity, and conversation get sparked from your surroundings.

I probably walk about 5 hours a week just getting places. I bought new sandals a few days ago and my feet are covered in blisters because I didn't break them in. Right after buying them, I walked for an hour.

So... I walk to get places. BUT... I recognize that I feel better emotionally/mentally when I'm walking. especially if part of the walk is through a park or by the water. I love natural surroundings. That's something that I really miss being in the city. I read somewhere that people who look out there window and see green (grass, trees, etc) live longer than those who look out and just see buildings and concrete.

Walking good. Me likes. I should really treat myself to a nice leisurely (spelling?) walk to the harbourfront or a park. Spend the day reading a book in and wandering around a park. Ok. I'm going to do it. As soon as I have a free day...

Oh! and I love the fact that walking is so healthy for you. I don't specifically do it because it's good exercise, but it does influence my decision about how I get from point A to point B. When people ask me if I work out, I guiltily say "no... but I do walk 5 hrs a week!"

I love to walk also, but I don't get to do enough of it. My s/o doesn't like to walk and doesn't like me doing it on my own..esp at night...which is when I have the time usually

I love walking too. I go out for 45-60 minute walks and I take my discman and listen to music on the way. I aim to try and walk about 3 hours a week, but sometimes it's hard to find the time, or the weather is particularly bad. I've been doing that for about 6 months now- it's great :D

I walk on my treadmill. I have to be watching something interesting on the TV so I forget what I'm doing, or it's torture. I jack up the speed and incline in intervals and keep my heart rate within the target range. I do walk the dog around the block, but my neighborhood is annoying, so I don't usually enjoy it. We have a trail here, but it's sometimes crowded. And the trailhead parking lots are notorious for car break-ins, especially the one closest to my house. (Excuses excuses excuses...)

I really like going for walks. Where I take them depends on my mood; if I want distractions, I'll walk around the centre of town/city where all the shops are for window shopping. If I'm in my hometown and I just want to feel nature, I'll walk on the water-side boardwalk (in the summer), or down to the beach.

I've never done any sort of walking race, just running.

Walking for the sake of walking is torture for me. I don't mind hiking, as it's a vacation sight-seeing destination thing, but just going out and walking...ugh how oh how I hate it.

It probably has to do with being without a car for most of my life and doing all my errands by foot/bike/etc. Why on earth would I then use walking as a stress reliever? ;)

walking is my primary type of cardio. i walk VERY fast, so it is a great workout. i mostly do it on the track in the gym but sometimes on the treadmill if i am feeling adventurous! the problem with the treadmill is that i am uncoordinated and with the speed i walk at it would be cvery easy for me to lose my balance and fall off creating this big scene. if that happened i would have to cancel my membership and move out of state as i could not handle the embarassment!!! but i enjoy it a ton. i feel with how fast i walk that i can fly!! it is awesome!

<------Another fast walker here. When people walk with me, they always complain that they can't keep up.

I walk with my dog all the time. My family goes camping a lot, and my best friend almost always comes. We pack up bookbags full of water and yummy foods, we rent a canoe, go a few miles downstream, and then hike the entire day, and canoe back! It's awesome. Walking in the woods is even better for me. It smells wonderful, and it really stretches you muscles! I love walking! In fact, I'm camping this weekend... yay!

I love walking!!! I enjoy powerwalking and strolling around the neighborhood. I walk outside as much as possible to enjoy the fresh air and avoid that trapped gym feeling. There is a converted rail trail near my apartment complex that is an awesome place to walk. It runs from downtown all the way to the northside so there is constant changing scenery. I have never done any race walking, but I have contemplated doing some local charity walks.

Hey, that rail trail thing is awesome! They are building one around here that is supposed to be about 30 miles long. I am excited! It won't be ready for awhile though...
