In order to give people a chance to discuss the war with others who share their views I'm creating two threads. This thread is not for debate and I will delete any posts that are not appropriate.

I am very serious about this and will strongly consider suspending anyone who posts in an attempt to start a debate.

This is the appropriate thread for debate...

Some people say the war is illegal but:

"When the president does it, that means it's not illegal."

So if you're pro-war you post here?

Michael

Yeah but out of fairness I didn't want to call it that. ;)

I just love reading 1vegan's posts! Such entertainment.

In the other thread, he said:Lets hope this is in the right thread:

"1- the war is illegal without an agreement of the UN."
-Not exactly. If the US put forth a resolution asking for permission that was then not passed or vetoed by the UN Security Council, then the war would be illegal. Instead, Bush and Blair have loopholed the matter, by claiming force is authorized in earlier resolutions.
Of course, this all assumes the UN is a legitmate body.

"2- Bush knew he was going to start an illegal war al along that’s why he overruled the agreement that supported the ICC"

-Bush overruled nothing. Congress, in particular the Senate, has to agree to any treaties. ICC would not pass muster, as US representatives cannot sign away the Constitutional protections of our soldiers. I keep explaining this to 1veagn, but he is slow on the uptake.
Bush did state he would support the ICC, as did a majority of the Senate.
The train of thought that this was part of a plan to invade Iraq, pre-9/11 can't get out of the station.

"3- America and Americans all over the world will face a blow-back for years to come because of the way bush has handled this."

-Yeah, next thing you know, someone might attack one of our ships in port, blow up an embassy or two, or even commit horrible attacks in the US.
Wait a minute, those have already happened! Damn.

Good point Tame, and I see the question I posed from last again, again, again, went unanswered.

Only two solutions to removing the threat....One the threat steps down, or two we make him step down. Quite simple.

With the threat of war, it is reported Iraqi troops are already defecting in the North and even a few in the South. I believe this was generally believed to occur in the North as only a few Iraqi divisions have been placed in that region, but to here of troops doing the same in the SOuth is encouraging, because this is one of their strongholds.

Also Pentagon is reporting today, of Elite Republican Guard possibly being outfitted with chemical weapons. France came out and said they would be willing to particpate in the military conflict if WMD are used by Iraq....Hey France,,,thanks, but no thanks....we don't have time to look after you:)

I think it would be to an advantage to garner further Iraqi surrenders if we offered additional incentive. I guess freedom and not dying should be enough...but what about offering some type of food compensation for the surrendee and his family, or some token of financial compensation. Just a thought.

Also, I was thinking, once the conflict is over, how awesome it would be to have the opportunity to sponsor a family. I would love to have direct correspondence with one family and do anything I can to help them. Whether it be financial...I think I can rebudget and come up with $100 per month, or simply a friend to talk with, being a role model with the families children, making/buying sending clothes and needed supplies. I really believe in this. I would cherish this opportunity and would love to visit and just extend a hand and help them with any project that they so desired. I think other citizens not only from the US, but around the world, would love to have the opportunity to be more directly involved. Whether we are for war to solve this conflict, or against, I believe there is a common agreement we all want to see the Iraqi people succeed and experience new founded freedoms.

Latest poll tonight shows 70% of Americans are backing militiary action to remove the Iraqi terrorist machine.

I am not starting a anti/pro debate here. I am assuming that you would prefer truth above all else. So here's a poll question.

Poll: Do you think think Mr. Bush is telling you the truth or feeding you government propaganda that may or may not be true?

I'm talking about all the evidence he has presented about Iraq and Saddam Hussien as well as his proclaimations that the war will be short and sweet. It includes the reports that Iraqi troops are defecting.

What do you guys think? Is it truth or propaganda? A little bit of both? If it turns out to be mostly propaganda, would you change your views or would it remain the same? What do you think the President should do regarding the information provided to the public?

I see our gov't says emphatically that without a UN backed resolution, Canada will not get involved.

Interesting... not exactly sure how I feel about that considering the US would protect us in time of need. I mean its not like we have a huge military or anything, and our military equipment is old and crappy. They've been doing military budget cuts for years now.

Still, I wonder if our military should at least be providing supplies and such to those overseas, in a support role. For or against it, Canada DOES indeed rely on the services of the US military for protection.

Rushabh:

Actually if it were me at this point, I would move this over into the War thread...I have my views on this matter, this will indeed invite a debate...

All of us that believe in liberating Iraq and clearing out the WMD, chill out in this thread now; likewise, those opposing conflict hang in the anti thread.

Robert

KC, I think me and you probably have similar thoughts on Canada's non-participation bud, if that's what you are referring to. I think Canada should be involved to some degree, despite not having the military might to do anything other than a support role. I think they should be at least contributing that.

So, in my mind, this is not a debate point of view... its what I feel Canada should be doing in support of the US initiative.

Shoot no, I was responding to Rushabh.

But regarding your topic, I would love to see Canada and Mexico get somewhat involved and showed unitity between North American Neighbors, but will I frown upon it.. Hell no, you are my neighbor Robert, I know our countries would always back each other 100 percent if conflict ever shifts this way.

Does anyone have a website that would show me what we're fighting for? Like when we invaded Afghanistan I already knew about the way women were treated, but I don't know anything about Iraq. I've heard lots of Free Afghanistan speeches in the past but never Free Iraq, so I guess I'm asking what is so bad about Iraq?

Chemical, biological weapons that can cause mass destruction.

Links to terrorists, such as Al Queda. Al Queda could drop a dirty bomb (filled with above weapons) over a city in America from an airplane.

Human rights atrocities, such as 1,000's of Iraqi citizens killed by WMD by direct orders of Hussein. Men, woman, and children tortured, raped, decapitated, eyes gouged out, electric shock treatment of children in front of parents in Iraqi torture chambers.

Just to name a few... If you are uniformed and want information, direct yourself to any television news outlet or perform a search at www.dogpile.com

Hey Majake, everything is under control in here. Why not be mature and move along to the anti thread. No reason to stir the pot.

what? im tired of paying $2.19 for a gallon of gas, i want cheap gas dammit.

majake

i think cheap gas is a perfectly good reason to go to war, this is the pro thread isnt it?

majake
03-20-03, 05:05 AM
see, im all about liberating the oil from Iraq.

KC Kid

Actually, majority of high gasoline and fuel oil prices can be attributed to the strike in Venzuela in conjunction with lower output from OPEC. Prices are actually falling in KC, we are down to $1.57 per gallon.

If Saddam doesn't set it on fire, it will actually go for rebuilding Iraq and stabilizing their economy. It will have little to do with overall supply and demand.
