I love grammar. I correct people on grammar unless they ask me not to do so. I'm like a broken record at school though, where who/whom and pronoun agreement errors are abundant.

I like them.

oh yeah.. i wanted to add that i love grammar (i'm a bit of a linguistics nut), but i've slowly started to understand that spoken english and written english are entirely different things... which both tend to differ from proper english anyway. i'd rather concern myself with something less trivial (or trivial seeming to me -- yes, i slightly cringe inside upon hearing someone say "who" where "whom" should be, or write "there" where "they're" should be, and i'm actually kind of proud of myself for getting over my compulsion to correct everyone all the time).

Grammar...Trivial? Why, that's heresy! Mayuko is a witch! Arrest her, grammar police!

heh :) i didn't mean to say that grammar itself is trivial, but i think the higher goal of a conversation is to communicate one's idea, and if the idea is successfully conveyed, i think that a few small long-forgotten grammar rules are trivial.

When I make grammatical errors, I want to know about them so I can try to avoid them in the future, so in that sense I like the GP.

But of course, there are many contexts in which GP-ing is inappropriate.

It annoys me when I'm reading a thread and someone points out spelling, grammar, or typos. It feels like an unwelcome interuption.

Don't correct my message board posts for grammar. I average about 10 seconds writing them. I think if you every met me in person, or read anything formal I have written, you would find my use of the English language to be quite proficient.

I'm not sure how to answer that since my job is as an editor/writer. Wouldn't that make me a bona fida member of the force? :surprised

I agree with borealis and remilard. I think it's inappropriate and impolite to correct someone's grammer, especially when it's unsolicited and in a casual atmosphere such as this. However, if I were writing a professional paper, that's a different story.

Is someone says "My chlosterol (sp?) is high", then I think it's find to spell it for them.

If someone's posts are unreadable b/c of the typos or very poor grammer b/c they are lazy or trying to act dumb, I think that's ok to complain about.

I don't think it's cool to complain about occasiona typos or to make fun of somone who cant type well or ain'ts a good speller. Engish is a ard langeruage to know.

I don't want to get in the middle of anything, but I think he has a problem with the grammar corrections.

Because I'm a medical transcriber by profession, proper spelling and grammar are important to me. I cannot tell you HOW much I cringe every day reading some of the posts here. However, I quickly realized when I first registered that there is a difference between knocking off a message board post and not being concerned about spelling and grammar and (as others have said) writing a formal paper. I have to squelch the temptation A LOT to correct people's spelling and grammar. I actually breathe a sigh of relief when somebody else does it, but I try not to do it unless it's in a lighthearted fashion or when I really can't understand what the poster is trying to say.

I believe someone can spell their name as they choose.

As far as the grammar police...**** 'em.
