In May, 2004, Good Jobs First showed that Wal-Mart has received more than $1 billion in economic development subsidies from states for its stores. The subsidies have come as many states are forced by White House tax cuts and reductions in federal grants to make tough budget decisions. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities shows states are cutting subsidies for publicly funded health insurance, child care, federal employment, both higher and lower education, and programs aimed at public safety and people with disabilities. Taxpayer dollars continue to subsidize Wal-Mart, who took in more than $200 billion in revenue and netted nearly $9 billion in profits last year, while paying worker near-poverty wages, and violating environmental regulations Source: The Progress Report, May 28, 2004

If you keep complaining, they'll just stop selling vegetarian stuff, and those cities will become ghost towns, and nobody will have a job.

I guess I don't understand why the thread title ends with a question mark rather than a period.

Robbing the poor to give to the rich has been going on in the US at least since Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980.

I end it with a question mark, as the Walmart supporters will probably question the information. So, a question mark gives a chance to refute

Does anyone know what is spent on corperate welfare annually? I'm curious how it compares to "regular" welfare.

Could they have written the article any more biasedly?!

Anyways, I don't think there's anything new or special about state and local governments giving cash or changing laws to convince companies to open up in their municipalities.

This administration in particular loves big business. Let the poor find their own way, but do whatever you must to keep the rich in the lifestyle to which they've become accustomed.

Giving tax money as welfare to businesses is just as wrong as giving it to individuals. If Wal*Mart can't earn their own keep, they don't deserve to be in business.

The article was about wal-mart being subsidized by state governments, we can't blame dubya for this one.
