I found when I went vegan I actually found MORE things to eat than when I was eating meat. I started cooking more Indian, Thai, and Chinese food. Just more Asian food in general. They have a lot of vegan/vegetarian recipes that are actually meant to be vegan or vegetarian. Most American recipes started out unvegan, and then were altered to fall into the vegan category. Try exploring more nut butters instead of just peanut butter. You can buy vegan baked beans and vegan chili at most grocery stores. These go great with some corn bread or corn muffins. Really cheap, and really easy to make. You can make hummus with garbanzo beans instead of buying prepackaged hummus, and make your own pitas. Homeade pitas taste better than store bought ones. Fresh fruit and vegetables aren't expensive during the summer time, and fresh fruit salads go great with anything. Spaghetti is cheap, and you can find vegan noodles and spaghetti sauce at any grocery store. I'm sure you could also find some vegan french bread so you could have garlic bread. There are lots of tasty vegan foods that are cheap and easy to make. Go look around on www.vegweb.com . They have a ton of tasty recipes.

I might try making macaroni tonight but instead of using the cheese that comes with it, melting soy 'cheese' over it when it's done.

sound good? :D

I'll report my findings

i don like salads. they have no taste. i'm vegan and i havn't eaten salad for three years. well, i eat some tomatoes with my regular foodbut i don think that count as the same thing.

go to CHAMBRLINS or WHOLE FOODS STORE. they hav REALY good things. you can find pasta (vegan ) you can find flour- to make you own bread or cookis or w/e. or just go to the local grocary store, buy veggies and make something. it's not that hard for instance i love eating this, i cut some green onions well, not that much maybejust one, cometomatoes, a carrot, some other greens chop them all really small. add some oil an fry it for a second, add some mushrooms or whatever else you want in there some salt. then wait a little, stir, stir, then add water, and chopped potatoes and let that boil for a while until the ptatoes get soft so you can easily break them in half with a fork or spoon or w/e. then you could wait until the water evaporates or eat t like a soup.
i sometimes add some pepper, and/or some four and just alittle soy milk - it makes it creamy and adds even more to the taste - i'v found that the more stuff you put in your food the beter it tastes - well, not ANYTHING. be logical, but generally, th more things, the more rich the taste.

good luck!!!! XD

Fruitarian Girl-How do you make your own pita bread?
(I must confess...I am not a teen anymore-but, I need to know!

1) get a cookbook (a vegan/vegetarian one is best, even omni ones are easily veganized) or go to vegweb.com (i suggest you only try 4+ star recipes)
2) shop with your parents and encourage them to buy produce
3) learn about nutrient suppliments. always have b12 pills and flaxseed oil around. b12 is a necessary suppliment for vegans, flaxseed is a necessary suppliment for everyone who doesn't eat flaxseed or fish regularly

when i first went vegetarian, i lived off of canned soups and pasta. when i went vegan i was smart enough to be able to shop and cook.
it's never a good idea to limit your diet to these things if you want to live healthily (vegetarian or not)

This is a very, very easy pita bread recipe.
3 cup white flour
1 tsp salt
1 cup Warm water
Vegetable oil
Mix the salt and the flour together, then slowly add the warm water until you make a nice, not too sticky dough. If the dough is too sticky to knead, add more flour. Knead the flour for about 5 minutes. Divide into 12 balls, and cover the balls with a damp cloth and let them rest for about 10 minutes. After they have rested, roll them out into flat circles. Cook them in the veggie oil over medium-high heat for about a minute and a half on each side. Cover the pitas with a towel after they are cooked, and keep them covered with a towel until you serve them. I don't recomend keeping them for a long period of time, they taste best if you serve them while they are still warm.

If you don't like salad, try putting avocado on it. It takes the place of meat really well. To me, a salad without an avocado isn't quite complete. I eat salad at least once a day because I love it so much.

If you're having a hard time thinking of good veg food, get Marilyn Diamond's cookbook, The American Vegetarian Cookbook from the Fit for Life Kitchen. It's got enough great ideas for a lifetime. Also, go browse at your health food store. They have all kinds of cool stuff.

Here's my fav. pancake recipe

*1 and 1/4 cups all purpose flour
*1 T sugar
*1 T Baking powder
*1/2 T vegetable oil
*1 and 1/4 cups soymilk or water
*dash of cinnamon (optional)

lighly mix all ingrediants in a bowl, just enough to mix them together, don't mix it too much or the pancakes will be tough and gross; leave 5-10 minutes to rise. Gently fold down, and leave another 5-10 minutes if you want to wait. If not cook med/ med-high on an oiled skilled until golden. Serve immediately.

Serves 2 (or one very hungry person), takes 20-30 minutes

For the syrup, mix together and heat about 1/2 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar in a little pot until the sugar is dissolved, then add a bit of vanilla.

Hope that helped, I promise it's good. The pancakes aren't as light as the kind you're probably used to, but they're really good anyway. I like them cold too. Try a google search for vegan recipes if you want to find some more. There's tons out there.

I'd reccomend getting at least one cookbook too, such as How It All Vegan, and having quick to eat things like pasta and sauce around, plus beans, couscous (even you've never had it, it pwns, you can make it with some spices and walnuts and its a meal), and having fruit and some soy milk around.
