So my nutrionist said I should start up resestance work with small 1 or 2 lb. weights. (or soup cans) to build back all the muscle that was lost and help my bones.

So, where do I start?

*get weights (only have 5 lbs. and she said that would be to much.)*

now how often should I do it?

I don't want to become bulky or look like a weight lifter!

Any help would be wonderful.

:hi:

Ummm...AL...

Is your nutritionist a crack head by chance? She DOES know you don't eat...right?

Don't you touch a weight/can/running shoes/whatever until you get to 1800-2000 calories a day.

Cheers.

did your nutritionist by any chance also tell you to... hmm... EAT?

I agree with Dosh. you've got a crap nutritionist if they're telling you to lift weights and not going, "EAT or we put you inpatient."

yeah, you're not going to build any muscle back until you're eating enough for your body to work with.

AoD: yes, and I have.

It's going to be a slow process of being able to eat again since before my surgery anything I would eat my body would not absorb. It will also take awhile for my liver to 'wake up' and start seeing what it needs to be doing now that I don't have a gall bladder.

why not just use a can of soup like she suggested?

and jesus, you can't get 'bulky' anyway because you're female, but you're certanily not going to get bulky lifting cans of soup or people would be muscular from buying at sams club and cost co for god-sakes!

people have some serious misconceptions about stuff.

if you're eating, you can do your soup-can lifting every day.

Autumn...this is the thing. If it is going to take awhile for you to be able and eat normally again, why are you even thinking about do anything but sitting during this period? When you hit 1800 calories a day, THEN you can do whatever your heart pleases.

Cheers.

http://www.stumptuous.com/weights.html this might debunk some myths for you.

Learn how to do the arm curls, and raises and whatever it tells you to start with, and stretch. Drink lots of water, have protein after. Don't do it every day at first, do it every second day.

Edit: Obviously, stay away from the big stuff. :) Stick with beginners. Remember, food is your fuel for this, you need to eat.

Well, when someone is at a low weight like her...they have to force themselves to eat when not hungry. I know I still can go days without feeling hungry...even if I fast all day (which I don't). She has to deal with the no hunger thing...and start eating a LOT. Then, when she is at a healthy weight (and eating enough)...she can start working out.

:lovesign: still, but.... :whack: :whack: :whack: .

Cheers.

I agree, thats why I *have* to need to walk 2 mile or something every day or I'll end up not eating at all. which is worse.

Well, thats a healthy amount for someone who wants to live, exercise a little...and be non-ed. Now...go eat.

Cheers.

AL, I agree with everyone here. If you aren't going to consume 1200 + calories daily, then you have no business doing anything but sitting on your butt all day/night. Hell, I sit on my butt on day and I DO consume 1000 - 1300 calories daily. It kills me not to exercise but I respect my body and DO NOT EXERCISE. Why? Because even I (the eating disordered anoretic who got down to 59 lbs, which is a BMI of close to 11, before waking the **** up) realizes it would HARM ME not HELP ME.

Exercising at this point will harm you AL. I don't care what your nutritionist says. He/she obviously does not know how little nutrients and calories you are consuming daily. And if he/she does, then he/she is a crack head and you desperately need to start looking for a qualified nutritionist.

I know that consuming 1800 calories is super scary to you, it is to me as well. But 1200 is a reasonable goal. Toddlers need that amount okay? We are bigger than toddlers.

Think of it this way:
under 1000 calories = starvation diet/ aka slowly dying
1000 calories = thriving/ aka simply existing and barely getting by
1200 calories = surviving on min. amount/ aka living
1200 - 1400 calories = nourishing body/ aka getting well
1500 - 2000 calories = normal healthy life

This doesn't mean you shouldn't move at all. Sure. Every hour or so get up from the chair and walk at a normal or slow pace for a minute or so. Then go sit back down. That is enough to get your blood moving and your metabolism working. It is enough to get you hungry.

Also, AL you aren't going to get hungry from exercise at this point. Your body is in severe starvation. It doesn't remember what hunger is and when it is supposed to feel it. You have to retrain your body by putting food in your mouth even when you are not physically hungry or you WILL die. I'm sorry to be this blunt but that is what will eventually happen. This is not a fairy tale movie where a prince is going to come on his white horse and save you. If you do not save yourself, you will die. Your heart could give out at any time. Right now you are starving your body. So your body is eating your muscles. Your heart is a muscle. Your body is eating your heart AL. This is how people with EDs die. Their heart ends up with holes. And eventually it just stops beating. The human body can only endure so much. Yet you proceed to test yours in this disrespectful, fatal, deadly, dangerous, and (to be blunt) immature way.

It is easy not to eat AL. That does not take strength. That is not success.
Success is fighting. Eating. Living. Getting well so you CAN exercise and regain your muscle.

You will not rebuild any muscle until you properly feed your body on a daily basis. And no, 1 teaspoon of almond butter, some carrots, some cereal and some soymilk does NOT qualify as properly feeding your body. That is a starvation diet. Even infants eat more than that.
