View Full Version : rejoicing the death of meat eaters/hunters

Honestly, what is this about?
I have seen in two threads, within a couple days of each other, VB members cheering or being happy about the deaths/possible deaths of people who eat meat or hunt.
Here are the two threads I am talking about:
http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=37015
http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=37022
This is a bit of a mystery for me. For people who are supposed to be so keen on practicing a 'compassionate' lifestyle, it sure does seem downright hypocritical to cheer the death of another person. I for one, do not take any solace/happiness/cheeriness in thinking about the death of these omnivores/hunters and how their families must have grieved or how they could grieve for them. Nor do I find it to be something to cheer about when I think about the deaths of my Mom/Dad, sister, entire circle of friends and entire extended family. (all omnis)
This is one of the ugliest things I have ever seen on VB and I am quite honestly completely disgusted.
I find the evils and ugliness of factory farming to be just as awful as this attitude, this cheering the deaths of other people. Compassionate, I think not.

I agree with you completely.
ETA: I've deleted the posts I made that may have offended others. It was obviously thoughtless of me to make such posts in the first place. In no way do I really wish for the deaths of others. Such posts, I believe, are really more venting and expression of frustration than genuine wishing, anyway.

I agree with you too, RM. It is a logically unsustainable position.

Agreed.
I don't rejoice in any death.

I also get disturbed reading those types of threads. Its certainly hypocritical, as is human nature. Plenty of religious organizations are based on 'goodness' and such, but as we know many also breed hate and intolerance. Some vegetarians are not at all compassionate towards other humans, some environmentalists burn down buildings (resulting in even more resources used to rebuild), some 'holy people' murder others and preach hate. Some people just get so wrapped up in one aspect of their beliefs that they completely ignore so many equally important factors. Its hard to see the world when you are blind.

From Merriam-Webster:
One entry found for schadenfreude.
Main Entry: scha·den·freu·de
Pronunciation: 'shä-d&n-"froi-d&
Function: noun
Usage: often capitalized
Etymology: German, from Schaden damage + Freude joy
: enjoyment obtained from the troubles of others
Sounds like a normal human reaction to death to me. The Darwin Awards are another good example of this is action. Stupid people buying it is entertaining but it's not politically correct. This much is true.

Seriously though, I don't think I'm that bad of a person for chuckling at an ironic/bizarre situation like that of the Hunters dying of heart attacks. It's not as if I pray to god everyday hoping another omnivore dies. I certainly wouldn't wish that on my omnivore friends and family.

That's true...Hm, a big component of this is the bitter self-righteousness that CAN [not always does] but CAN accompany the chuckle you refer to. I don't feel like you have that [self-righteousness] but maybe that's a judgement that I'm making. <runs off to reexamine motivations...Jeez I love it here!>

I try my hardest to feel compassion for some of the people who say that ugly stuff. They must be very unhappy on the inside.

I agree, Rainbowmoon, and I thinks that Kirk's posts in the one thread are among the best I've read.
I was listening to part of an interview of a man who just wrote a book about the September 11 hijackers, and a comment he made reminded me of the posts where people have taken pleasure in the deaths of hunters or other omnis. He was saying that the most compelling lesson he learned while researching the book was about the potential destructive power of belief, that religion can be a great comfort and have many positive aspects, but that when we come to the point of thinking that our way is the one absolute right way, and that everyone else is absolutely wrong, it is easy for belief to become utterly destructive. I think that is true of all aspects of belief, ethics, morality, etc. As Jinga said, it leads to blindness.

Silly! Of course we want to breed with fish (and birds)! Who doesn't want to be able to swim like a fish and fly like a bird?!?!

I don't rejoice in any death. It makes me sad when someone assumes that I will, though. When Frank Perdue passed on, my mom said something like "I guess you'll be happy to hear that Frank Perdue died."
And I was like...WTF? What did I ever do to give the impression that I would wish for anyone's death, even if I passionately disagreed with him/her?
I try to bring compassion to every aspect of my life, but being human, of course I fail sometimes. But I'm doing my best, and I think that's what we should all try to do.

I agree, ceryna.
I don't think its acceptable to cheer about people dying for any reason. I mean, its just not funny, cute, amusing, anything. I wouldn't cheer about an animal dying and I wouldn't cheer about a human dying. I just can't wrap my mind around what rationale would make it 'ok' to think its funny/beneficial that people die, even if they do things we disagree with.

Yeah, I don't really understand that mindset either. I realize that some vegans equate hunting and meat-eating with the murder of humans, but I don't understand why some people feel gleeful at the death of murderers either. I can honestly say I'm not happy to hear anyone died, even if they've done things we can all agree are horrible. Almost everyone is loved by someone and everyone's death means pain for someone. That doesn't mean I'm going to weep if some awful dictator dies, but I'm not going to dance in the streets either.

Although I will find it hard not to smile when Pinochet dies... it will test my character.
