View Full Version : Runners- how fast can you run a mile?

I've been working on my speed lately and really have no idea what a good time is to run a mile in. So, how fast can you run a mile in? How about a 5k?

If I had to run as fast as I could, I could probably do 7:30. I usually like to run 5Ks, and run an average of 6.5 mph, which is about a 9:30 mile. I'd like to eventually be able to run it in 24 or 25 minutes.

I choke on it, and my PR on the treadmill is an 8:20...
Outside, my PR *might* be a 9:00...however, even though they've improved over the past few months I've been running, t'other day I ran and I was running about a 9:40...but I also wasn't pushing myself very hard...
I would hope to complete a 5k in 30 or under...I have one in about two weeks, so I'll see how that goes... :worried:
:nigel: Cheers!

About 9:00 now, last time I was in shape under 6:00.
Good time is highly subjective though.

I think my best (recorded) time was 7:15 or so, but I played soccer then so I was running for endurance and not speed.
Did a two-mile at about 9:30 per mile.

I can jog a mile in *checks stopwatch on phone* 9 min on average (range from 8:30-9:30)
I can run a 1/2 mile in about 3 min.
I can run a 1/4 mile in just over 1 min (but the road has to be completely flat, and no curves at all, no potholes, basically, nothing that could get in the way - every step is in perfect balance, even slightly off and I'd go tumbling end over end or just break something). But... I can't last more than that either at that speed either.

I haven't timed myself for one mile since the elementary school physical fitness testing. Currently, I usually run an easy pace for 3 miles averaging 10 min miles. I recently did a 5k and my 2nd mile was about 8 minutes. I'd be interested in seeing how fast I could run a single mile ... I just prefer to go slower for longer.

My all-around average is 6mph for running/jogging, but when I'm in fairly good shape, I can do that for 10+ miles and end up stopping just because of the time.

My fastest is a 6:57...but I can average a 7:45 or 8 minute mile for 3 or 6 miles, usually. But I think that's mostly because I just want to get the miles done a.s.a.p

I usually average about 8 1/2 to 9 minutes. I usually try to keep my pace pretty slow and sure so I can go longer.

I love the long distance running too. When I go out I usually do 6 miles and it takes an hour, so yeah, 10 minutes each. I like the jogging pace where I can just kinda get lost in my music. When I was timed (back in high school) my best time was 7:02, but I doubt I could to that again (though I've never tried to tell you the truth). I just love to run for stress relief. I've never run a 5k or anything similar, but maybe this summer I'll try! :)

Back in the day when I ran cross country in high school, I got my mile to under 6 minutes.
That was pretty rad (for a girl; guys are generally faster :grr: ). :D

My fastest mile time when I ran track was 5:40. Now, I dunno...probably 6:30 best. If I worked at it for a bit I could probably get around 6 minutes.
My fastest 5K is 20:26, but I would REALLY like to break 20 minutes sometime. I'm really more of a distance runner now anyway. I ran a 1/2 marathon in Ohio at the beginning of April... and it snowed the whole time! It was crazy! I averaged an 8 minute mile if I remember right.

During the summer about 7:45. Now it's probably 8:30. Blah..

I never record my mile times. I ran a half marathon with an average pace of 10:12 a month or two ago though. And I was pleased with that.
I have no idea how fast I could go if I sprinted a mile.
I'm slow.

My standard run/jog is about 3 miles in 30 minutes. So, the Olympics aren't exactly banging down my door to join them, but I think I'm in good shape.

Well, for all of those that think you're slow, you all have my best time beat! I'm pretty new to running yet, though, so I guess I'm not doing too bad.
Does anyone know what the record for the fastest mile is? I've been trying to find it but haven't had any luck.

I'm about a 10-minuter at them moment. But slow and steady ;) I'm trying to up my speed and endurance as I'm playing soccer for the first time and I'm a bit out of shape when it comes to running fitness so hopefully that will be improving soon :)

I've never even tried running a mile as fast as I could, or even reasonly fast. I average around 10-11 minutes, simply because I want to keep a steady, somewhat slow pace.
However, now I'm curious and want to see how fast I can actually run a mile.

At the end of cross country season last year I had a 6:47 mile. I don't know what that would be now but I'm guessing an obscenely high number.

Like some of the others, I've never tried running a mile all out. My fastest kilometer time is 3:24 (1.6 km per mile). My fastest 5K was 22:41. I'm more of a long distance type. :D

I run 4 or 5 days a week, and when I run, I never am gasping for breath but running at a good pace where my breathing is even and I am not exhausting myself (although I sweat buckets!). My calculations show I run at around 8:15 - 8:30 at a good pace. I should really try to do an all out sprint to see how fast I can go, because I can probably do it in 7 minutes if I tried. The thing is, I don't have runner's leg's; they are more like cyclist's legs (muscle muscle and more muscle).
I never was into runner until last spring, and when I first started I was gasping like a fish out of water after 3 minutes of running. It's amazing how my body adapted to it.

I average about a 10/min mile. If I'm just going 1 mile, I can go faster, but I like to go for distance.

I jog 5 miles a day so my pace is supper slow. I can usually do it in under 50 minutes and I'm happy with that. I don't think I'm built to run fast because I never could, so I just stay at a nice pace and enjoy it.
