...and I'd like input on what some of the good brands are. I know there are quite a few people on here that are really into it and I'd like to know how well their bikes are holding up, what brand they use, some of the pros and cons, etc.

Most of the bike riding I'd be doing would be on the road. Though there are some grassy parts and dirtroads around here, as well.

Thanks in advance. :)

My advise is to go to your local bike shop and talk to them. Tell them your budget and your needs. They'll set you right up.

I'm Canadian, so I cant give you pricing (as it would mean nothing). However, my bf bought a lovely mountain bike with front suspension for decent, and I bought a ultra light Norco mtn bike used for 1/3 of it's price.

Just this: no matter what you do, do not get what the salesperson will call a "hybrid" bike. They are useless pieces of crap.

Decide whether a road bike or a mountain bike would be better for you. If you don't do any serious off roading, then I'd suggest getting a road bike with reasonable fat tires. They might call it an urban road bike or something like that. Great for multi-use.

I've owned many bikes and I've been relatively happy with all brands. Get something good, but be honest with yourself about how much you'll be riding it. If it's just for a few hours per week for exercise, don't spend more than a five hundred bucks (that's the low end for a road bike). If you think you're serious and want to do some long rides, spend more.

If you don't want to spend more, get a mountain bike for a few hundred bucks, and switch out the knobby tires for something more practical.

Personally, if you are not into competition or real sporty stuff, I'd be getting something with a "in hub" gears.

I'm very happy with my Trek. Other than flat tires, and having to replace 1 shifter, it's given me no trouble.
