View Full Version : Late for period...sort of scared/freaking out...

Okay so I'm...I guess a week late for my period. Two things before I start my rambling:
1.) Last month (as in March), it was off by a week or something from February...I was stressed/had some sort of stomach flu thing...
2.) I've taken two pregnancy tests, one last Tuesday (first "late" day), and another last Saturday (after still no appearance)
So should I be freaking out? I'm thinking about taking yet ANOTHER test...I should make the penis pay for them this time  ...at any rate...I'm trying to sort this all out in my head before I go into panic mode.
At first I was thinking, that since it was thrown off in March, maybe it was "re-setting" itself back to the schedule of February...because I've not been under any more stress than normal (which is generally a good amount and that's no effect)...I have not been eating less (if anything I've been eating more  )...and my exercise hasn't seemed to increase all that much (if not decreased even...).
So...I don't know. Even if it's not a ... *cough* ... :baby: ...I still don't think it's exactly "normal" for it to just disappear for a month. Not that I'd care if there weren't the risk of... PAYING CONSEQUENCES FOR MY OWN STUPIDITY.
Please don't leave posts shaming and chastising me...I already know. But seriously...has this ever randomly happened to any of you ladies? I just don't know what to think and I'm trying not to freak out...my periods have always been really easily "irregulated" (yes I made that word up), so maybe I should just chill out? I also have the thought in my head that if I DO start freaking out, that'll only add on the stress and that somehow will affect it too!
:nigel: Thanks for any responses/help.

Happens all the time, every month for me up to two weeks late. However, I am aware (in my case) that there isn't a chance of pregnancy.
I wouldn't be concerned for another week or two, unless there are any other complications.

the only way to ever be sure it's not a pregnancy delaying your period is to get tested at a clinic or doctor's office. go in at your earliest opportunity.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I got two urine pregnancy tests at the doctor's office. They were both negative, but I was preggers! Get a blood test. That is the most accurate test. Good luck!

I'm effing terrified now...
I have an appointment at Planned Parenthood for next Monday (earliest I could get in)...not that I have the money but...
I want to die. And this is all my fault.
Excuse the self-loathing...I just need to vent...

planned parenthood generally only charges you what you can afford. make sure you let them know that you are strapped for cash.
it's no use panicking about this now. wait until you know for certain before you do you're freaking out, pseudo. you've said yourself that your cycle has always been easily disrupted. have a cup of cammomile or a squirt of some rescue remedy, get a good movie, and curl up under a blanket. try to relax. you can only do so much right now.

kreeli's right - relax! I've gotten the willies about missing my period...and I wasn't even having sex! But just the williness of it all.
A bath, a nice book, some bubbles, a few cookies....just calm yourself down. Oftentimes, that's enough to start your late period.
and  at making "the penis" pay. Is the penis attached to a person? If not, how did you met it? ;)

Were you stressed this month too? Have you taken any new medications? My period is always regular (and always has been) but I entirely missed it one month once because I had started taking Reactine (I stopped taking it after that).

...The Penis used to work for me...I was The Penis's boss...
Seriously, the guy used to work for me when I managed a restaurant. Neither of us work there anymore, but he still works for me... ;)
(Though right now I'm thinking not in the way I wanted him too  )
And msbunicula (sp...), I'm not on any medications.

it's not unusual for women to 'skip' a period or two a year. It's not healthy to skip them consecutively (once you hit three consecutively, then you need to definately check out your hormones) unless one's 'normal' cycle is one that is 90 days or more (and this does happen). but, if your menstrual cycle is commonly the 28 to 32 day cycle, and you're 'late' or 'skipping' one or two, then it's not so bad.
for me, i have cycles that can range from 27 days to 35. I have periods that are really short (3 days) and light and two periods a year that tend to be *really* heavy. It's not uncommon for me to 'skip' one period in the summer, usually july or august, with the period following being one of the two heavy periods of the year.
Charting is really interesting. Things that i sort of 'knew' before, i can really see playing out. I can understand what's going on with my body, and i can think about (and really know) if i'm pregnant or not based on my fertility cycle and when we had sex and how. Basicly, i can easily know if it's something that may be a health concern or something that my be a pregnancy concern--because it's all documented. it's pretty cool.
so, even if you are on a pill or wahtever, it's still a great practice for learning about yourself. just another plug, mind you. ;)

Your words bring a relief to me...I suppose I'll be over there tonight to take another test (he bought some yesterday) and...yeah.
Is learning the correct way/actually doing it time-consuming? I would be very interested in the FAM, and/or just the details of my cycle but...I can't even get around to reading books I've had sitting around for months now!
:nigel: Cheers.

it's actually really easy. You can download the charts online (i'll find the link), and then you just take less than 2 minutes a day to chart everything. And i also now combine charting and journaling (so does my husband, i'll explain).
Basicly, we have printed out 12 charts for this year already, though of course only Jan through most of april are filled out. I keep them in a notebook on my bed-side table with my thermometer (a digital BBT thermometer that cost maybe $3?).
Ryan is more consistant with 'waking up' than i am (that is, while i tend to 'wake up' naturally at 7;30 every morning, sometimes it's 7 and sometimes it's 8, and with BBT you have to record at the same time every morning. If you are late, you just put that on the chart and it's no big deal, you can still work with it. Anyway, he takes my temp at 6:30 and records the number for me (by circling it on the chart).
THen, when i take a shower, i wash myself and check my cervical positioning. If ryan's showing with me, he takes the opportunity to check cervical positioning! LOL it's all for health, really! haha! That doesn't take much. Once i get out of the shower, i record the cervical position.
throughout the day, i tend to pee. when i do, i check out my cervical fluid (when it's present, which it isn't always). I look at the consistancy. When i get back home, i record what i found in my chart.
I also like to record things like activity levels, stresses, when i had sex and what sort of barrier we used (if we used one) and what other things we used (for instance, toys and what they're made of, etc).
Ryan also keeps a journal related to the chart. He calls it the "how i'm figuring out the girl body for fun sex time" journal. For lo these many years, there have been times where both of us have wanted sex, but been annoyed or frustrated by the fact that things aren't working. That is, something that worked last week, ain't doin it for me this week. things that worked yesterday, ain't working today.
now, when we do have sex, he writes down what we did, what worked, and then we compare it to the chart. After doing this for thepast three months, ryan knows that on this day (such as today, which is the first day after my period ends, which is the 4th day of my cycle in estrogen phase), i'm particularly dry. This means that there must be lots of foreplay, lubricants ready, and cool-related toys (ie, working with ice or whatever). He learned this over the last few months--and while there's still a lot of experimentation going on, he can sort of 'foretell' what things in his 'bag of tricks' is going to really work for me (and therefore us).
Now, he can look at a chart at the end of a day--and basicly 'predict' what will happen tomorrow and can read what i would want that day/evening. We haven't been frustrated in many weeks now--which is pretty cool.
i know, probably TMI--but it's another good reason to chart. You can really learn about what works when--because not everything works all the time because the body is different each day of the cycle!
---
it's really easy to do and really easy to learn. I thought taht garden of fertility was a really easy read, and the applicable parts (the rules) were only two chapters. Everything else was helpful, stuff you can read after you've started charting. Just to get started, there are two or three chapters (short) that you can read--get a chart, wait for your period to begin, and you're rolling!

sorry: BBT is basal body temperature. it's yoru body temp when you first wake up in the morning--assuming you wake up at the same time every morning. you have to take the temp before you get up to pee and everything!

i'm a new fan of FAM.. i've been charting for almost three weeks now, and i'm still amazed at how easy it gets once you understand the underlying principles and establish a routine for doing it. as long as you're consistent using it, it's pretty amazing what your body will tell you. i just take my temperature every morning at 7:30, note any changes in my cervical fluid throughout the day, and check the position of my cervix once or twice a day. i can't believe FAM is not common knowledge among women, and even among many people in the health care industry, because it absolutely should be.. it makes me sad that i spent years being needlessly insecure about my body just because i didn't understand how it works.
i highly recommend you read the book taking charge of your fertility, it provides a great overview of the whole method. i've got stacks of books sitting around waiting to be read too, but i finished this one pretty quickly.
ETA: lol.. almost exactly what zoebird said. some of her previous posts on FAM were what inspired me to try it in the first place, and i am very happy that i did

Stop worrying about it. The flu or other illnesses can mess up your timing for two months or 3, stressing over it will just make it worse. If you have been having unprotected sex, relax, you might be preggers. No worries. I'll take the baby. Promise to raise it in an honorable, meatless manner, spoil it rotten, and be a totally awesome Granny. So relax, if you are, we got it covered. If you aren't, not to worry. The body will eventually get back on track. JUST STAY CALM.

I'm on the pill and my period was screwy the month after I had gastroenteritis. I hadn't even been having sex at the time (not that one is even attractive with GI  ). Don't panic 'til you need to, even though its hard not to!
kreeli's right - relax! I've gotten the willies about missing my period...and I wasn't even having sex! But just the williness of it all.
Haha, me too. I've thought I was pregnant without actually having had sex before :stinkeye:. We're talkin 12 hr delay in period. I'm such a dork. :dunce:

The good thing is, that if you are having a baby: you know now so that you can start doing anything/everything for a healthy pregnancy and planning what to do with baby.
If you're not pregnant, then let this be a warning sighn of what to do next time.
and- don't freak out about being late YET... just relax, because stress can make your period irregular. And also- have you had any major diet changes lately? That could mess things up to...
Relax.
