10.6 mile run this morning.

It was beautiful out! Once again I am reminded how much I love running with a group. We have the most interesting conversations.

Conversations while running... :wayne:

HeHe.

4-hour hike today...mainly uphill @ 4% average grade (the first half at least)...gave me a chance to further break in my Montrails :D

The scenery was beautiful, the weather was generally nice (hot in sunny areas), and I got several good pictures taken.

:nigel: Cheers, hammies!

Ohhh the hiking sounds like fun!

The conversations. Yeah, we usually talk about things that aren't normal dinner type topics either. hehe. And we have such a large mix of people aged 25 (me) all the way up to 70 years old.

I wish I could go hiking. I'm jealous! :D

I run in a group on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. When we do faster workouts like hills and track, I find I can't do it on my own, and the group really helps to push me. Sometimes I prefer doing the longer runs on my own, because I like to just think and meditate. But most of the time I really enjoy the conversations too. Yesterday was 32K in 3:17. I'm now tapering before my 100K race in May.

hmm. Just a 13 mile bike ride today, have been feeling real crummy and tired lately. Didn't want to go today, probably shouldn't have, but did anyway. Hopefully the rest of the week will turn out better :)

::le sigh::

15 minutes of running...no bueno  ...I did a mini-sprint and that hurt...my ankle is still... not... right...

And that really makes it tough to put in any good distances

:nigel: N/C for injuries.

PS, if your ankle hurts you should take a couple of days off and maybe ice it. Better to rest it then make it worse. :)

Mark, that is awesome how you guys meet three days a week. I know that I usually need a kick in the butt mid week.

Anna, you've been kicking ass lately! No wonder why you feel worn out. :)

I did jiu-jitsu again today, and then take-downs after class. I probably will stop by again tommorow... I've been eating lot and gaining back the weight I'm trying to lose for the tournament. Was 150, and now back to 154.

Hi guys, 18 mile run today. It was great right up to the last 1/4 mile, then something happened to me that has never happened before. Cramps in my calves. Holy ouchies! I know this can happen because of dehydration but I drank like a pitcher of Gaterade during the day as well as a lot of water and juice, I also drank a couple times during the run. I drank at the 9, I had gaterade and V-8, and my son brought me gaterade at the 15 to go with my goo, I had more to drink at 16. I do sweat out alot of salt and I have to be wary of Hyponatremia, but I've just never had this happen and was so surprised...and in so much pain. I literally stopped, bent over and was yelling out because of the pain. I felt dumb because people came running to my aid...they were so nice! One woman helped message my legs...even though I was all sweaty.

cyk, it's hard not to want to eat alot when you are working out alot...maybe try to be more careful of what you do eat. Easier said than done, I know.

brownie, you didn't like pilates?

pseudo_vegan, I agree with Captain, don't run if you are in pain...it will only make it worse and you will have to stop running for even longer. ***Knows from experience*** Also, while running, you should almost always be able to carry on a conversation...if you can't you are probably running at to fast a pace.

annabanana, Hope you're feeling better soon!

dudda, Hehehe...I'm just so glad to have you back here! :hi:

Sorry manduh, you need to go to the companion animals page for talk about the hamsters you have. I do love hamsters BTW, but don't have any.

Markc7, I wish I had a group to run with, I do have a couple people I run with on occation but most of my long runs are solo and for the most part I prefer it that way. Although during the races I really enjoy talking to people, it's part of what makes the race fun. Good luck on your 100k!

vegetable, Wow! back to back races....I'd be tired too.

Captain, Great run, lucky you too for having a group to run with. We do have groups in Milwaukee, but I live far enough out of the city that it would be more of an inconvenience to try to run with them...and there is a group that runs nearby, but they run on Sat. the only day I don't do anything.

Go Hamsters :vebo:

oh and sorry, didn't think i was going off topic  i can post my q's elsewhere next time if it's a problem

Sorry, I just saw this on last weeks thread, you were not off topic, your Q's are in a great place where lots of folks can help. pseudo_vegan or anyone can offer advice to peoples questions. I only offer advice based on my own personal experience like most of the folks here.

FYI, I agree with psedo_vegan on the matter of days off in between weight lifting and also cardio. However, more cardio is better I think, I do weights 2 days a week and cardio 4 days a week, but I am a runner and that's why I like more cardio. At least one day off of everything is a must in my mind. Sat. is my day to rest and eat, it makes you strong. Listen to your body...if you need a rest take it, if you don't, kick ass.

Ah, the kindness of strangers. So sorry you had those cramps, I hope they don't come back!

Eh, it wasn't so much I didn't like piltes, but I had already worked pretty hard for about 20-30 minutes and I dont know if I was focused enoguh for the class. I had a hard time seeing the instructor and I ended up really hurting my fuschia because I didn't have the right angle for one of the leg circles. I like runnign so much more, you don't think, you just...run. :hamster: :D

Have you ever tried a sports drink with a really high electrolyte content? Cramping up like this sounds like you're not getting enough salt, rather than a hydration issue. I'm not sure if it's available in the US, but I drink a product called eLoad, which has about 3x the salt of Gatorade, and surprisingly doesn't taste bad! :D I sweat so much and lose tons of salt, and I really find that it helps. great to hear that there were people around to help you out! :bobo:

thanks slynny :)
i was just worried cause when i'm doing my sessions with my trainer i go alone in the day when the bf is at work, but then days i'm home at the same time as him i drag him out to the gym cause he needs to get into shape for biking season. i was just worried if i go 2 or 3 days at a time i might overdo it especially since i'm new to all this.

as for weights vs cardio i'm working to gain muscle mass and strength, i was underweight so i've been scared to do too much cardio but so far so good.
i worked out yesterday with the bf and did cardio, today i have my last session with mr. trainer. oddly i'm not sore at all today so i should be alright but i'm skipping the cardio. hoping to still have energy left to take a walk downtown for some shopping after lunch

It happened last Wednesday somehow...didn't notice 'til Thursday...took Thursday off ('cept for ab-work)...did a half-assed run on Friday (b/c it still hurt); took Saturday off (minus general walking around stuff...no biggie)...and Sunday went hiking...

Erm.

It's not exactly "right" yet today, but better than it has been...so...

19 April 2005:

400 cable-crunches @ 40-lbs. / 100 cable-crunches @ 42.5 / 125 leg-lifts / 15 oblique crunches w/10-lbs., each side...

>_< feelin' the burn

After work I plan on going for a lonnng run...not going for speed this time; had enough of that last week I suppose...so just time/endurance

:nigel: GO HAMMIES!

(In addition to A.M. ab-work)...

35 minutes on recumbant bike; 20 minutes on the treadmill...'twas all easier on my ankle...

And even though some of you may laugh and chide, I ran an 8:45-mile on the treadmill tonight, which is 15-seconds down from the last time I did a mile-time on the thing, so that's good for me :D

:nigel: Cheers!

2 hours tennis practice today, moderate intensitity. I'm nursing a mild case of "jumper's knee". When the knee is 100% the plan is to work up to 3-5 mile run after practice and 20 minutes of sprints or shadow drills before, which was what I did in high school.

Anyone here run middle distance? I used to have a goal of running a 5 minute mile, closest I got was 5:20. My father ran the mile in college so I figure my genetics should easily accomadate that time. I think I'll set a goal of running 5:30 by the end of the calendar year ( I will need until late summer just to get back to my ideal weight).
