I had some potting soil leftover last year so I grew a big pot of wheat grass for Puddin'. She loved it! She ate it, played with it, slept on it, and sometimes just sat near it and looked at it. It was her own little island vacation spot. :p

It died at some point, and I just have this big bowl of dirt sitting around. I would like to grow some more for her, but I don't want to buy more potting soil, really. Is it safe to just get some of the dirt out my my yard to grow it in? We have lots. :D

Does anyone know, or have an educated guess?

I've taken dirt from the garden before and used it inside but it's a lot heavier than the soil you buy in bags. I'd suggest sifting it first to get out any bugs and small rocks but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Dirt is basically dirt, some are just 'cleaner' than others.

ETA: Make sure the soil is loose so the seeds can pop up easily. Dirt from the backyard tends to be clumpier.
